Oil Life Question
Oil Life Question
Hey everyone,
Took possession of my 2008 CGP 6 Speed Manual Nav Thursday, 04/10/08; should I be concerned if oil life is @ 90% already?
Just a tidbit--I have 435.3 miles, have yet to fill up tank although must do so today as fuel warning indicator came on! Have not manually figured out MPG, but if trip computer accurate, I figure I've averaged 25.5 mpg the first week, mixed "city" and highway driving.
Thanks for your input!

When I first have my oil changed it jumps down 10% quickly but then it levels out a bit. I wouldn't worry about it at this point. You are currently sitting on a rough average around 4k miles for your oil change (which I know is actually your concern here) however it is new and it was mixed driving. Give it some time and if continues to drop 10% per 400 miles, then pursue the problem at your dealer. I am sure it will improve over the next 1k miles.

Your most accurate MPG rating will be miles traveled/gallons filled. You can set your MID to reset TRIP ODO A on refill, so the first trip odometer measures how far you've gone on a tank. It resets when you start rolling after filling up so before you start up at the gas pump, write that mileage down on your gas receipt.
(Or ... www.fueleconomy.gov has a handy-dandy Excel spreadsheet you can download to track fill-ups, and upload to record your actual MPG.)
I've read that the first oil in you new car (btw ... CONGRATS!
) is "break-in oil" and may need to be changed sooner than normal changes. Take it in to be changed when it reaches 10% or 5% , is my
.
There have been healthy arguments about whether to normally change oil when the MID tells you to ... which, incidentally, seems to be at 15% (when the "hey!" light goes on), ... or stretch it. The 2004 manual recommended 10,000 mile oil changes (and the filter every 20,000, which defies logic), but in subsequent years, they reduced that to 5,000. To sell more oil? They found out the engine needed it more often? Quien sabe. Your owner's manual talks about all this. For the first 12,000 miles, I'd certainly take good care of your engine and treat it like a friend.

I'm up to 4400 miles on mine, it should turn to 30% any time now. I've found mine lasts about 600-650 miles between. I'll hit the gas occasionally and rip past someone or have some fun, but I take it easy on the commute(what's the rush to get to work, haha). Seeing some other figures for the oil life on other TSX's, I guess I'm a conservative driver, lol. I don't view myself as that conservative, I'm not "aggressive", but not "conservative".
