Oil Filters

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but what are people using for oil filters on the TSX? I'm guessing it's a common filter (same as a 2003 US Accord?).

Any ideas on the best place to pick them up? I'm guessing the dealer is not the place for the best price, eh?

Or is there a quality option outside of using an OEM Honda filter?

Thanks-

Jason

This thread discusses at least 2 different filters that people have used. Since I haven't changed my oil yet (plan to do it this weekend) I don't know which one to use. I'll be posting my findings after the weekend.

I would stick with the OEM filter but if that's not good enough for you then you can go with Mobil 1 filters.... they are made better then OEM but if you change your oil frequently (oil & filter) than what's the point.

I know Fram has a supplement listing catalog for some of the oil filters for 2004. The TSX happens to be there. I dont have a filter number (my dad picked them up for me) but when I get home I can post it if you'd like. I think they were $3 and change each.

Before I did my change, I heard people were using the 03 accord filter, so when I went to walmart and could not find the tsx in the catalog I went with the 03 accord. Same engine, same filter.

However, if you check the fram website, they have a recommended filter for the TSX.

TSX 7317
Accord 3593

the 3593 is slighty bigger than the OEM one, but will fit fine.

I emailed FRAM and they told me that it will fine, but make sure to use the 7317 next time (duh!) Don't forget to get the socket oil filter remover, Type B ($3) <--- from walmart.

If you decide to go elsewhere, look up the company website online to see what they have for the TSX. Pepboys carries puralator.

I know this is listed in the Owner's Manual, but I don't have it handy. What's the oil capacity of the TSX with the filter? Would you need to use a little more if you use the 3593 instead of the 7317? Based purely on filter size, would there be a difference in oil pressure between the two?

Also, when comparing Fram's multipass efficiency to Purolator's, Fram is 94%, Purolator is 96%, and Purolator Pure-One is 98%. Then again, those "tests" may be biased...

it's 4.6 qts. Not sure how much more oil you will need if you use the slightly larger filter. Don't think it will make that much of a difference.

What about the oil pressure/flow rate differences? Anyone know the effects?

Honda/Acura has gone to a smaller filter on all their 4 cylinder cars starting this year. This is suppose to give better oil pressure for the vtec.

My Integra gsr which uses 4.5 qts per oil change has gone from the 3539A to the 7317 filter also. I suspect Honda copied Toyota design for the smaller filter because I had a 01 Celica, which also used the 7317 filter and held 4.5 qts of oil. The filter was tiny compared the amount of oil in there, but that was necessary for the VVTL to work.

And the BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK oil filter is the Purolator PureOne oil filter. At $5, it's a steal and top rated in oil test. Much better IMO then the FRAM made POS honda filter.

www.pureoil.com and click on the pureone logo.

On Saturday I changed the oil and filter, and I compared the original oil filter with the Purolator PureOne PL14459 (Fram PH3593) and the Purolator L14610 (Fram PH7317).

The TSX oil filter is more similar to the 14610/7317. I would have installed the PureOne (PL14610), but both auto parts stores that sell them were out of stock.

Lightbulb supertech

Walmarts supertech is champion labs product and good enough and quite cheap. I used an old 5 qt 5w30 durablend I had. Next time will consider 0w20 Mobil one since it is recommended for 5w20 or 5w30 applications.......
I used the small 7317 filter as recommended. Man that is a hard filter location comparted to my Accord V-6 and MDX.

oil analysis at Club RSX has proved M1 0W-20 protects as well or better than M1 5W-30. I use it with great results, but it does burn slightly more, nothing signficant in my application though (base RSX)

If you've ever done some research on the way Fram filters are made (all cheap paper with glue that might let go at the worst time and poor filtering characteristics) you'd shy away from them.

For general use, the Puralator filters are some of the best you can get at a decent price. Use the biggest filter you can get that still fits.

If you want to get the best oil filter... I would go with M1 filter or Amsoil filter. I have used PuralatorOne in my gf car but I'm a big fan of sticking with the OEM filter. As much as you guys think it's a rebadged Fram... it's not. It has to meet Honda's spec, which is a little higher than Fram. So yes, it's not the best filter out there (unless you can get the older JDM versions, which were one of the best in the business) but why go through the expense if you plan frequent oil changes?

I have 130K miles on my 94 GSR... I've used nothing but OEM filters, and have yet to have any engine related problems. I use to swith oil & filter every 3250 miles... but I started using M1 around 100K and now go 7500 miles between changes. No problems to report. I'm thinking of going with M1 filters though...

Anybody here used the K&N filter? I've used them on all my previous cars and found them to work well. I also like the nut on the end to help with removal. Anybody know what K&N filter number to use?

FRAM is made by honeywell though (aren't they?), I would think they are made of high quality if made by honeywell.

I will caution the use of 5w-20 on any car that doesn't specify it. If you look on the labels of a 5w-20 qt. of oil, there is a warning label that states do not use unless recommended by car maker(*something similiar to this*).

MOBIL ONE has specific recommendation for 0w20 on high reving 4 bangers calling for 5w20 or 5w30. I would not put non synthetic 5w20 in the TSX. MOBIL One 0w30 is a better choice for the TSX.

Could somebody explain why you would put something different than the recommended oil weight in a car? Let's assume fully synthetic oil (Mobil 1 for example)? Why not get the same oil weight fully synthetic oil for your car?
