NY tints

Moving to Long Island NY.

1. Should I be worried about my "all - round 35% tints"?
2. How do you avoid future inspection fails with tints on?

People from NY help. Any tips?????

30% is the legal in NYC, but i know ppl that have been hassled by cops even though they had legal tints.

like the above thread mentioned, i would just avoid streets/areas with more cops. otherwise, you may want to keep your windows down (had a friend that did this in the dead of winter to avoid getting pulled over, not advised) or maybe slide open your sunroof cover to let more light in. at night will be tough.

Long island should be fine.

However, don't even try upstate NY. You WILL get pulled over by the State Troopers there.

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN NEW YORK?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In New York, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of l

where are you currently now? If you keep your license plate from a different state then you follow the law in that state. One of my co-workers has his plates from north carolina and he has 20% in front and limo tint on back and rear. He also doesn't have a license plate in the front which is legal in north carolina but not in new york.

I've Had 15% since I got the car in 03. Ive gotten pulled over once, that's cuz I go to school in Jamaica. I live in Nassau county, LI and they dont care at all. Theres a cop at the entrance of where I live and he doesnt look twice. If you get pulled over for something else and the cop's a dick, he wont hesitate to give u a tints ticket as long as he has the thing that measures how much light goes through. When I got pulled over, he told me that you can't have ANY tint in the front two windows and he gave me $120 ticket. 60 for the left front window and 60 for the right front window. HE WAS AN ASSHOLE

NY is 70% all around and no lower than the AS1(?) on the front windshield. I have 35% all around and live in upstate NY and have never had a problem with troopers.

I know this topic has been discussed before. But since this is a new thread I figure i give it another shot. Has anyone been to any good tint shops in Queens? Mine are definitely too light and I want to get them re-done.

Thanks,

i was looking into this one guy. i think he's in brooklyn. his website is www.theartoftint.com. he seems to be very reputable and his clientele includes some pro athletes and rappers. haha.

he quoted me $450 to do all side and back windows using huper optik film, with a lifetime warranty. the only thing stopping me is the price, but he does work on luxury cars and is familiar with acuras (brake light is a problem for the back if you want the whole thing tinted). if people trust him to work on those cars, and he's using the best material, $450 might be worth it.

The guy from the art of tint was the person who originally tinted my car. He did a good job but after 4 months the mole skin came off on 2 of the 4 windows. He did replace my back window that got scratched up for free. Problem is the tint is just way too light. You can see right in even at night. When I went there there was a guy asking to put another layer of tint on top of his current one because he thought it was too light as well.

The price he quoted you seems a little steep. He only charged less than $300 for mine.

hey, that's interesting that you got your tints done by him. did you use huper optik? that's supposed to be top-of-the-line film as far as tinting, so that might be the difference in pricing (my wife's friend got his TL tinted by him for around $300 too).

also, did he charge you extra for the moleskin? why did it come off so easily?

i'm trying to find someone to do this. everyone i know has gone to different places, but they either end up with ugly bubbles or the tint isn't done well. i think anything higher than 30%-35% wouldn't be worth the money to tint the car.

thanks for any answers you may provide.

I don't re-call which film he used but I re-call him saying his tint was only 35%. He did a great job tinting the car. He took about 3 hours to do it so I know he didn't rush it. I did my tint in the dead of winter so I am thinking the cold weather did not allow the adhesive to cure to the window and that is why they came off. Once it does come off though all the adhesive rubs off the tint and you get this nasty smudge. Honestly, if you can see my face clearly at night then I think the tint is too light. I can try and post some pictures up. Does anyone know of a free web site that can host pictures?

you can use photobucket.com or something. all you need to do is sign up.

this information is helpful b/c i was considering using him. what exactly happened to the moleskin that caused it to fall off? was it just not installed well enough?

I can only think of two things. It was too cold for the adhesive to stick or cure. But I kinda of doubt it because I park in an indoor garage and he puts a sticker that says do not use the window for 5 days.

The mole skin was too thick and the windows going up and down caused it to come off.

I failed to mention I am sure if I went back to him he would fix it free of charge. I am just to lazy to drive all the way to Brooklyn. I think he is near Neptune Ave. Good friendly guy and workmanship. I just wish the tints were darker.

Ny is 70% all around i think.. but the cops shouldn't really bother you... my friend's 3 series has like 30% and he's never gotten a ticket.. and it's been like 3 years.. but my friend's evo got 30's done like 3 month ago and he's gotten 2 tickets.. =D its all about the attention, don't bring attention to yourself and you should be fine.

tint tickets will vary from 65 - 150 and there is an alternative to tinting with the traditional tint its like teh mercedes tint. its a tint that has a hint of blue that is completely tranparent that blocks out UV rays and is said to make the iside of you car cooler during teh summer. i don't know the exact number or name of it. My tinter was telling me about it (Lorenzo in the BX).
