No More ABP??!!
I am in the process of courting dealers in my attempts to get a new TSX. I was all pumped up to get a nice Arctic Blue Navi when the dealership I am talking to in Charlotte comes at me with this:
"First as far as getting a Blue car it is not a matter of ordering. What takes place or how Acura goes about building cars is very different than the norm. How it works is Acura builds cars based on need and if there is not a market for a specific type of car (like the Arctic Blue TSX with Nav.) they will not build it. And what I had our GM do was run an inventory list for the next 6 months for all the Acura stores in the country on what cars were being built and there is no Blue car on the schedule."
How much should I read into this? Is this dealer just trying to lure me off of another car to get me in one that they already have on the lot?

Well, I would go to other dealers first to see what they say, but from what it sounds like, he's full of it. I mean, why would Acura's website offer it as a color option and then tell their dealers that no one can order it???
While your dealer is right about the way Honda/Acura produces its cars, it does not completely remove a combination from production, especially not for a whole six months. He's pushing you to take inventory he has in stock. Check with another dealer.
My dealer did the same bullsh!! to me, I wanted a manual/navi. He told me that he showed none to be available within a 5 state area for 2 months, pushing me to take what he had on hand (auto/navi). Less than one month later, guess what I see on the lot..... Assume that all salespeople/dealerships are lying SOB's, and can't be trusted with their own mothers, and you wouldn't be far from the truth. BTW, I did confront them, but they weren't even embarassed (as I recall, the comment I got was "what, don't you like your car?"). So, I ended up feeling like a moron, and they ended up being, well, you get the idea. Get on the Acura website, and use "dealer locator" and find all of the dealers within 500 miles. Call 'em one by one, and ask for the combo you want. If one has it, go back to your salesman, and tell him where he can get your car, and then tell him you want some money for doing his job. (You won't get anything, but it might make you feel better
) BTW, you want a really good read on how the car sales game works?

That article should be required reading for *all* prospective car buyers.

Yeah, that's total BS dude. Tell the dealer to check again because I just ordered one from a dealer this Monday (ABP 6spd/Navi). On top of that, there is at least one being manufactured as we speak, because the dealer told me that she has the exact same car I ordered arriving in mid-April. Unfortunately for me, that one is already spoken for. The dealer you are talking with is just trying to unload some inventory that has been burning a hole in his pocket.

Call American Honda, tell them the line the dealer is giving you and ask them to find you a car.
Each plant does have a production plan that is set many months in advance, but there is no way the dealer would know it, its confidential information.
Some models and colours are made in higher quantities, but AH wouldn't pay to develop a colour and not buy the cars (it cost a tremendous amount to develop a colour, match it, test it...)
Burn the dealer, call AH.

murphjuice - how long did they say it would be before they have you ABP 6MT/Navi? I ordered the same combo in January...sposed to be here April, so like 12 wks. lead time.

As of right now all the dealer knows is that their order will be built sometime in May, and it'll take ~4 weeks after that to get it here.
Thanks everyone for your reply. I am going to call some dealers and maybe AH and see if they can tell me what's up with ABP. Maybe I will make some dealer do the footwork for me and ask if they can hunt one down and give me a VIN #
How's your search going Mad Dog? I test drove at Hendrick on Independence a couple weeks back and really like the car. I may have to go back and test drive out on the interstate to get more of a feel.
