New Tires For The TSX...

Hey All...

Just thought I'd share this experience with you...

I noticed that my left-front tire looked low last week, so I thought I'd better add some air. I did so, and the tire seemed to hold the air alright...until this morning; the tire looked almost flat so I added more air and headed off to the dealer to have a look at it (see if it can be patched/plugged/repaired).

Well, the service manager comes over and informs me that I need a new tire (there were 2 holes in the tire from nails and one was too close to the sidewall for it to be repaired). I instantly thought the worst...how much was this new tire going to be? $400? $500? $600?!?

Well, the total damages: $270 for the tire (including balancing & labour).

Apparently, last year the same tires were over $400 each, but they've dropped in price to $279 (retail...they gave me a deal and I only paid $230).

So, there ya go...just thought I'd keep you all up to date on the cost of tires for the TSX!

Yep...Canadian bucks!

And honestly, I was really lucky...I drove at Highway speeds for at least 600kms with the nail/nail-holes in my tire.

I figure you can't put a dollar value on safety...well, then again, I guess you can: $270! Ha ha!

And I'm not sure what everyone's problems are with the stock tires on the TSX! I've never had a problem with them...although I'm beginning to think that the stock tires in the US are different from those in Canada...read lots of posts on here from people complaining about traction in cold weather; living where I do (Regina, SK, Canada) we get temps close to -60 (celcius & farenheit) and I've never had a problem!

However, if you're talking about traction problems on ice & loose snow (over ice) I don't think it matters what kind of tires you've got...you're gonna lose traction!

The stock tires are Michelin Pilot MXM4.

They are super smooth ride with no vibration at high
speed. That is all they have.

The wet traction is bad, the adhesion is bad,
the car is squirrely on these tires.
The braking is bad on the Michelins.
It's hard to comprehend
until you had the opportunity to experience this
car on real good performance tires.

I changed to Pirelli Pzero Nero. P235/45R17.
I cut one sidewall and bought two Pirelli for
$280 vs one Michelin for $220 ( yankee dollar )
Then I bought two more Pirelli. Now the car
really works.

They are not ultimate performance tires, Bridgestone
RE750 or S-03 are probably the best but summer only. The Pirelli
is maybe best all round with teh M+S rating and non-directional
in a Z-speed rating is very rare to find.

The Pzero has silica tread for top wet traction,
they are not uniderectional so they can be rotated side to side,
they are slightly asysimmetrical.

How long are these tires suppose to last? Do you think they will make it my 4 year/60K mi lease?

Oh well if i have to replace them I'll just get the khumos from dicount tire.. Only 102 a piece. I had the khumos on my Trans Am back in the day and they were quite decent tires for the buck.

Costco has the Michelins for 196 FYI

So these 235/45/17 size tires are on your stock wheels now? Your stock 7" wide wheels? I thought they were a bit too narrow to properly support a 235 size tire but sounds like you have no issues. Got any pics so I can see if they look too chunky on the narrow stock rims?

I plan on getting a set of the new Toyo Proxes 4 in 235/45/17 size if that's the case. M+S rated but supposedly performs as well as a summer tire in wet and dry. Almost comparable to the summer T1-S in performance according to some accounts. We'll see.

I'll try to post a pic tomorrow.

They protrude exactly .25" wider than the plane of the wheel.

They look right to me.
Other manufacturer's may not be identical.
Bridgestone P235's tend to be wide.

Design rim of p235 is 7.5 +/- 1.0",
7.0 is well within normal usage.

I just bought a stock MXM4 last week for $272 tax in and installed so your pricing seems in line with mine.

Yep.

A 235/45/17 tire is 235mm wide with a sidewall that is 45% the width of the tread (105mm in this case) and mounts on an 17" rim.

I think that's a bit too wide for the TSX.

I've just stuck to the stock wheels, but wrapped with Yoko ES100s @ 225/45/17 instead. One CM up in width isn't too bad, but going to a 235 is a bit much.

how do you feel about those yoko es100's, do they give you significant grips, especially when you do hard cornerings? and do summer tires wear dramatically faster than all-season? just want to know if there is major difference in gripping. also, what do you mean "One CM up in width"? isnt 225 to 235 10 mm that is 1 cm isnt it? or are you talking about going from 45% to 35% sidewall?

I love those tires. They hold well enough for me in corners (and I've got more Bondurant certificates than most of you have had sexual experiences ). As for the one centmeter part, 10 mm = 1 cm. I was referring to going up 1 cm from the stock width of tires (at 215). I wouldn't recommend getting a 225/35/17 instead of a 225/45/17 on the stock wheels. That's too skinny of a profile. You'll rattle your fillings out. The 225/45s do just fine.

Yup, I like the Yoko ES100 as well. Just got a set of 225/45-17 installed today.

kaikai114, if you are getting 18x8 rims, and I'm assuming the offset is 45-48. You will be better off with 225/40-18 tires to avoid rubbing when you lower the car.

only thing about 225/45 is SW height and ride
height will drop 6.25 mm, speedometer will be off about 2%

On 235/45 the SW height drops 2mm and speedo is of .007%.

I didnt want to increase fender gap 6mm. With a dropped
car no problem except 2% speedo. My speedo is already
reading high so this would be a big problem.

Someone advised me it is best for the ECM not to change
OD.

I will get you picks of my 235's tomorrow night.

I'm really sorry, I don't have a digital camera.
I am going to use the camera at work, in the
parking lot, at lunch, if it doesn't rain, etc.
And then I have to figure out how to post pictures
here. It's a major undertaking for me.

Dude no sweat. I was just kidding thus the "". After all, you're the one doing us a favor and I'm in no position to be demanding stuff... so I'll take any pic you can post whenever wherever at your convenience.

Translation: Hurry the f**k up already!

hehehe...

btw, to post a pic, just link it to the URL of where you are hosting the pics. There's an "IMG' button above where it says vB Code when you post a message on this forum and things are self-explanatory from there. If you don't have a host to upload your pics, sign up with photobucket.com -- it's quick, easy, and free and you are able to link to your pics from just about any forum on the web.

as for the wheels, i'm planning to install the 225/40/18 on Moda 18x8 +45 offset rims. how about 235/40/18, will that actually be more a better fit than the 225/40/18? just curious, but thanks for all the advices guys, i appreciate it by the way JTso, i just shoved that air filter in today, havent actually tried it yet, gonna give it a try tomorrow then post some thoughts, thanks again. and show us your new wheels when you get the pics!

With the Modas, do go with the 235/40/18. That's the perfect fit.

The 235/40-18 would be the perfect fit when comparing to stock. It provides the same OD as the stockers. However, the front tires will stick out approx. 5mm past the fender due to the +45 offset and the addition 1" to the wheel width. It will work fine and won't rub as long as the car is not lowered.

The reason I got 225/45-17 installed because my 235/45-17 tires were having that problem with my temporary 17x8 +45 wheels.

How do you like those, Kurt? I'm thinking about getting a set for summer once I buy some nicer wheels.

Just so you know, Yokohama is offering 30 days free trial on their ES100 tires. If you don't like them, you get your money back. I got a set of ES100 235/45-17 and later didn't like the size. They swapped them out for a new set of 225/45-17. No charge, not even mounting or balancing from Discount Tires. However, the tire shop never mentioned the free trial offer when I bought the tires. I just happen to found out on the web.

Check it out here. First page in red on the right.

Ok, I'm trying the picture think.

It's a glancing view so you can see the SW to rim width.

He comes through as promised!

Thanks T. It doesn't look chunky at all... almost looks stock. I'm getting that size for sure. There may be variations between manufacturers but I suspect that is marginal.
