I think this really depends on the person. I travel by car (e.g. other than commuting or running errands, etc.) only very rarely, and when I do it's along routes I have known for years. I've lived in the same town a total of 20 years and can get from point A to B by either the main through streets or even residential areas in a pinch. I could count on one hand how many times in the last ten years a quick detour might have been helpful, and on most of those I had a good map and managed just fine.

On the other hand, to the traveling salesman or someone who meets frequently with clients, or folks who have just moved to a new town, or just those like to venture out of their area by car on more frequent basis, I can see how a Navi system would be more valuable.

Champ- since this thread was intended to primarily help you decide what you want, I think the main point is this:

If you don't mind spending the extra money on it, you don't like carrying around paper maps, you don't live in an area that's quickly growing, and you don't already own some kind of portable GPS device, then get the NAV. If my SUV had offered a NAV system option that was good as the Honda/Acura model when I bought it, I would definitely have chosen it. Again, since my TSX will rarely see unfamiliar locales, and I already own a portable GPS receiver, I decided the TSX NAV was redundant. Well, that, plus I prefer to have real buttons for the A/C and radio.

[edit: This is interesting, I just searched google for "TSX NAV cold" and stumbled across this thread. (I hope it's OK to link to "the dark side.") Is there any substance to these issues? ]

Thanks xplor and everyone else...
All very good points. I will definitely let you all know what i decide to do when i purchase. I dont mind spending the money as long as it doesnt break and cause me to lose the function of the radio and AC to boot. I guess you simply have to pay to play, you know?

You can link to whatever you want on this site, we're not afraid. That's one of the things that makes this site so great.

As for the nav problems, I have not experienced them. I know that some have had them but it has been a long time since I have heard anything.

I got the NAVI and I still use it. . . it has saved me a few times. . .

if you dont get the navi you get no voice activated commands! and plus it is a nice panty dropper. . . pardon my french. . .

If you dont get it I think you might regret it like people on this forum that are looking for aftermarket navi

Yeah, there are several of those old May/June posts over there. Its hard to say since hardly anyone responding has their last 5 VIN digits available, but I don't believe those of us who have nav version 1.0030 have had the problems. (or at least as much. Zero problems with mine so far. )

hmm... Nav = .. Now only if we had a voice command for that.

I wish I would have got the NAVI...

I took my first trip yesterday in my TSX. It was a day trip to St. Louis. I drove over about 250 mile. The car drove nice and was very smooth at an average of about 85 mph. Not sure of the mpg yet. As I was entering the city I noticed my exit was closed due to construction. My directions were shot.

All of this by the way was during rush hour. Kansas City has no traffic to speak-off but St. Louis is a zoo. I called my hotel and was give wrong directions by a young person who could careless. I was a hour late to my dinner meeting with friends. If I had the Navi I would not have had any problems. Anyone who thinks they might use it probably will.

NAVI saved me yesterday. I had an early sales call and plugged all of the data in via the phone number. Long story short. Our office address database was off and a co-worker and I were sitting in front of the wrong building. The company moved 10 miles away two months earlier.

We called the company and got the correct address. My co-worker was panicking because we only had 20 minutes to make it on time. While she panicked, I calmly entered the address into the NAVI and sped off to the meeting. Needless to say, we made it five minutes early.

In my line of work this is a priceless piece of machinery.

Now i just have to find a red 5AT w/nav.
i'll probably have to order and wait.....(bummer)
Thanks for all your inputs.
Any more?
Yeah, that waiting is a drag. I'm lucky (relatively). I'm getting a car early cause the original buyer backed out. It's Meteor Silver 5AT w/Nav. I originally didn't want to spend the extra $2G, but everything else was what I wanted, and I would have had to wait until late December for a non-nav. In this case, the choice was $2000 or wait 2 months.

The dealer told me that the car is due on Nov 5. They'll need an extra day to prep it for me.

All in all, I'm sure I'll use the nav a lot. I have been using PC based map software for several years. I'm famous for always having several printouts of routes for long and short trips. I'm sure I'll still use printouts to some extent, but more as an aid to the nav.

One week more, and I'm going crazy waiting

This is an excellent story. Having a navigation system is a powerful tool depending on your line of work. But even for you "civilians" it can be great. This happened to me last night coming home from a week-long road trip:

I was racing home from being on the road all week because I had ordered a new Dell 19" flat panel monitor (it's INCREDIBLE) and it was waiting at my Mail Boxes ETC. PO box. Their office closes at 7:00 PM and time was running tight. I battled traffic all the way and just as I was getting off at my freeway exit, there was a huge backup on the offramp to make my right turn. Traffic wasn't moving and a bus was blocking the intersection. I'm now fuct! But what would happen if I made a left? Hmm, scroll across the screen, now I see a connecting street that will get me back on course, I'm gonna go for it! I made a left and saved myself at least 15 minutes of stopped aggravation. I got to MBETC just before the close and picked up my monitor, and I am a very happy camper.

That's "Nav Saved My Ass Story" #48. Just buy the damn nav!!
