Nailed!

So I'm driving home tonight and hear a funny sound...I thought it was just a rock stuck in my tire...you know that sound...I pulled over and inspected all the tires...everything seemed fine...then I get home and look again...on my rear left tire I notice this screw/nail that's well embedded into the tire...however, pressure was still holding...lucky I guess?

Anyway, this is a pain in the ass...tire shops are closed now so I'll have to take care of it in the morning...but just wanted your opinions as to what I should do...I still have the stock tires on and have always wanted to switch them but thought I'd get the most use of them before any action...they have 17,000 miles on them now...seeing the stock tires are probably gonna run me minimum $150...not sure if I should just do a patch job?? Not even sure if that's possible...Or should I drop a few more $$$ and get new rubber?

Thanks for opinions/advice

If money isn't an issue, I would recommend you replacing all four tires. Since the price of one tire would probably seem more expensive then buying a set of four.

I've had three tires replaced on my car because of nails.

What kind of tires did you have to replace? Stock? Funny thing is that the nail in my tire almost looks like it was manually placed...it's just perfect?! haha...

If I go with new rubber, any thoughts on sizes?

I've had to replace many tires before due to nails. I think that most tire places would recommend changing all 4 tires if $ wasn't an issue like kboosman said. But I believe that they recommend that you change out either both fronts or both backs.

Since it's still holding air, I think a simple patch may fix the tire.

If not in the sidewall a patch will do just fine. You should get another 5000-8000 miles out of your stockers. I highly recommend Yoko Avid V4S as replacements.

I have over 37k miles on my stockers with plenty of tread left. I think these are 50K mile tires. I'd have it patched for now. Normally runs about $10-$15.

I would get it patched so you have time to research what tires you actually want and find a good place to buy them (either in a store or online)

I guess I've been pretty lucky with punctures. In 1.1 million kms driven, I've had only one slow puncture. I never even had to put the spare on, except to get some rims milled.

yeah man.. nails are super common.. get it patched. any tire shop like 10 bucks.. be confident in your patches.. they usually outlast wear of the tire.

Like everyone says if it's not in or near the sidewall you'll be fine but you should replace those crap OEM tires asap!

A nail or screw stuck in the tire will almost never cause a leak until it comes out it seems.

Think that's bad? The guy who sits next to me at work just had to buy a new Pilot Sport 2 less than a week after buying his Cayman because a screw got stuck too close to the sidewall =/

A patch will hold just fine IF you want to keep the Michelins. If not, I got 4 Turanza LS-V's installed for $480 after $100 rebate Firestone is pitching.

Wow! That's a great price. The Turanza LS-V is awesome in the rain too.

To the original poster: Just get it patched. You'll have plenty of time to research, and blow huge amounts of $$$ on tires.
