long dist. brake in?

sorry, i didnt know where to put this thread and besides more people look here anyway

anyway

i was wondering how bad (or good) is it to break in your car by doing a long dist. travel??

example if i drive from coast to coast, ie. california to north carolina

of course keeping in mind the usuall break-in conditions

not excessive speeding ,
not keeping it at a certain rpm
warm up properly
not too much aggressive driving ie consistently speed lane changes

I think because the topic on break-in has been beaten to death from the many existing threads.

If anything long distance driving is good for breaking in the car because the rpm is running consistently while local driving will mean braking also.

make sure you vary the speed + rmps

dont stay at a constant speed of like 60

stay at 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80 and so on for a little while at each speed

Long distance break-in is fine if you're smart about it.

Baby the car the first 100 miles. Keep revs low (3K or less), vary revs, stay away from WOT. City driving stoplight to stoplight is best for this but not essential. Take a bathroom break or a drink break every once in a while to let the engine cool down a bit. (temp cycle)

Next 200 miles visit the mid-rev range a few times (up to 5K), vary revs (but not as religiously as the first 100 miles). Two lane highway is good, downshifting for corners and traffic lights (or stop signs) occasionally. Take a 15 min. drink/bathroom break a couple of times.

Next 300 miles. Do a few full throttle low rev runs. Stay on the interstate but adjust your speed every few minutes. 75 -> 65 -> 80 -> 70 -> 60 -> 75 (then repeat). Redline it a couple of times on the on-ramps.

By 600 miles you should be good to go.

You've got a pretty good handle on it.

Varying your speed is a total pain-in-the-ass on the interstate highways, so you might consider taking backroads for the first few hundred miles depending on where you are.

Note that brakes and clutch are more sensitive to proper break-in these days than the engine itself, so avoid hard stops and excessive slippage when launching.
