Initial gas mileage on 6MT

Hello all, just wondering for 6MT owners out there, what was the gas mileage you got when you first got the car brand new?

Mine has around 900 miles now and I usually drive 50% city and 50% hwy (by driving time duration). The avg mpg (my own calculation) is around 25.5-26.5 MPG. Computer shows avg MPG as 27.xx MPG. My hwy speed is around 70-80 MPH. I haven't rev over 4K RPM yet.

Does it sound normal? or should I expect higher MPG after first oil change is done at 3000 miles? I was expecting higher MPG (close to 30) on this car because my 02 260 HP TL-S has avg of 27 MPG constantly.

Please advise,

I'm seeing about the same on my 08 6MT, perhaps 1 or 2 MPG more if I do more highway miles. I also have about 900 miles now.

New engines always take some time to get to optimal gas mileage. You probably won't see 30s until after a few thousand miles.

At 50/50 highway/city driving you'd have to be pretty light footed to average 30 mpg. City driving just sucks gas down, there's no way around it without drastically reducing the weight of the vehicle. If you driving style remains the same as it is now you might see a slight increase in your average.

Great post Wil. I was looking at what some were getting on their TSX & was surprised it's not more than what I too am getting on my '02 TL-S. I consistently avg 25-26 mpg w/ a 6 cyl engine.

Your mileage seems entirely normal to me. My '04 6MT, which I've had since new, has nearly 56,000 miles on it and I've been computing my gas mileage at pretty much every fill-up since the car was about 6 months old. My overall average the last time I calculated it -- probably 4 months ago -- was 27.8 mpg.

Roughly 75% of my driving is highway and my typical highway speed is between 70 and 80. I've exceeded 30 mpg exactly four times, and only by a fraction (i.e. 30.3 mpg), so I can't relate to the many reports I've seen here of people getting 32, 33, 35 mpg. Still, I don't consider the mileage I've gotten to be atypical or disappointing.

Yes Flounder, I was surprised too.. Hopefully MPG will get better after engine breaks in after few thousand miles as datadr said.

My old 98 Accord EX-V6 MPG dropped to ~21 MPG with mixed city/hwy driving after 8 yrs of driving and that was one of the main driving force to replace it with TSX. I remembered my 02 TL-S MPG dropped back to 22 right after transmission was replaced and it came back up after few thousand miles of driving. I guess it is due to new part breakin.

Wilchan - I see you previously had a '98 V6 Accord. I have a 99 V6 Accord coupe and would like to have an 04 TSX next (and add I/H & Hondata eventually). How would you compare the TSX to accord for daily driving (powerwise) and then spirted driving comparo power-wise. Both cars weigh about the same - but one has a bit tourquier V6 but coupled w/a crappy Auto tranny - whereas the TSX has the same HP but less tourque BUT the effeciency & control of the 6MT. So I really love everything about the TSX but am just concerned the power may be a bit of a let-down...what do you think?

my mom owns a 1998 honda accord V-6, bought new 11/97. It has 74,000 miles on it. I prefer my 06 tsx-100% better riding more comfortable car. My car has MT whereas the accord is automatic. My car averages 32-35MPG. My best was 42.2, worst was 27.8

since you do 50/50 based on driving TIME, i imagine you're doing mostly highway MILES. try doing mostly city driving, and you won't be complaining about 25-26mpg any more.

Hello H22_J30_K24, Accord V6 has more torque and you can feel it when you run uphill.. For daily driving, you won't feel TSX underpower... I really like this TSX, it turns in quicker and suspension feels stiffer and the whole car feels more solid.

Hello ruffellprefley, ya if it has 25-26 mostly city driving, I will be happy with it for sure.. It is way better than my prev 98 Accord V6 already by 4 mpg... I will see as I put more miles on the car I still love driving 6MT..

New tires have something to do with lower initial MPG too. In my previous car (where I watched the MPG very closely), new tires at 45K dropped the MPG by about 2. After about 3-4K miles it came up again. I'd give it some time. I don't know if it's cold in Union City, but cold drops it too. It's between 30-40 up here, and Im getting about a 2 MPG drop from the summer.

I don't know about new cars, but using synthetic oil helps too. I finally coughed up the extra money for it this last oil change and I picked up a few mpg. Driving 65 on the freeway going back home (100 miles) I averaged 35.6mpg

after 19k miles driving my 06 6-speed. I average 23-25 mpg with 75% highway miles.

even when I do 100% highway miles I still get about 26-27mpg.

I wonder if it has to do with the tl wheels I put on it and the wider tires.

Well you really have to be conscious about how much throttle input you use. When I let my friend drive we generally drive at the same speed (75ish), but he usually gets around 28 because he isn't as careful while I get 31-32.

The TL wheels probably are cutting down your mpg by a bit since they're wider.

This is almost exactly what I get. On straight highway driving, I have gotten as high as 35 mpg (own calculation, MID indicated 37+), but 33 is more typical.

I've noted the mileage is markedly worse in the winter. In the warmer months (except for peak A/C season), I can get about 2 mpg better in mixed driving -- the computer says 28-29 instead of 26-27...

Incidentally, I carefully broke in my engine (procedure somewhere on this board), and my mileage never really changed. I have almost 10,000 miles on it now. I also use Mobil 1 synthetic oils -- still no real change.

Mileage goes down dramatically on the highway above 70 mph (unless you're drafting someone). 65-70 will help.
