I just got the rear oxygen sensor for my tsx 2004 changed, I was charged $295 for the part and $80 for the labor!!!!
I got a sense that I was ripped off. Any ideas or suggestions please.

I dunno, but you might find more answers in the 1G TSX section at https://acurazine.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=124 rather than here in the 3G TL section.

Welcome to AZ and G/L.

Ripped off, when I had my prelude the O2 sensor was about 80 bucks for Denso, I got it installed for free but I don't see how it would be more then 20 bucks (If your mechanic was doing an oil change for you he can swap it out while the oil is draining :P)

According to Delray Acura, the sensor is around $290 MSRP price, but they sell it for $216-@218. It looks like the shop you went to charged you the sticker price and profited the rest.

As for the labor, that sounds like dealership rates. Even if it takes 5 minutes to do, they charge customers by the hour. Thus, you paid for a full hour.

hlachheb,

SoCaliTrojan is right on the money here- the dealership will ALWAYS charge the maximum price for both labor as well as parts (M.S.R.P. is the pricing protocol) so it's always a sagacious move to consider independent, reputable Acura mechanics instead of dealers. Next time that you need to get any work done on your TSX I would recommend procuring the parts yourself from a trustworthy OEM parts dealer (I looked up the o2 sensor for a '04 TSX and thus far http://www.acurapartswarehouse.com/P...gPicture=False has the best price at $210) and then brining it into the aforementioned independent shop

There HAS to be some alternatives online...bosch or denso...then install yourself. Whatever, it's done. Just learn the lesson and move on! At least it's handled now...

Bosch tend to have issues in our Hondas.

Well, was basing that on my 97 accord...had check engine light on and replaced it with bosch and it solved the problem. Not sure about long term though because I didn't have the car for much longer after that.

yea you got tricked. o2 sensor probably would cost 70$ at most!. if you can un-screw a nut, then you can change 02 sensor. so i guess labor would be free.

Not for an OEM sensor will you get it for $70. The price I found lists it at $290 and will sell it to you for $210. Like i mentioned the Bosch O2 sensors while they will work for a short period of time, tend to fail quickly ~ 1 year (or so I have heard from people).

There are two O2 sensors on the TSX, one up on the header which compares values to the one after the catalytic convertor. You didn't get tricked on the O2 sensor, but you paid a premium for it, which to be honest, if you break an O2 sensor installing it (only takes one drop, you gotta pay for a new one. If a shop breaks it, they gotta pay for a new one.

Sounds like hlachheb went to the dealership (AKA stealership). If you consider average dealership prices, then no, you did not get ripped off.

If like me, you determine value to be what you receive compared to what it cost, then yes, you got ripped off. I would have tackled the O2 sensor replacement myself for 1/4 the cost.

Did the sensor replacement resolve the issue you were having?

When you go to the dealer for maintenance and repair, they will use only OEM parts which have a huge mark-up. Given the final price, you should be LUCKY he didn't charge you FULL retail on the sensor and the labor. As someone else has pointed out, that sensor retails for almost $300.

I'm not sure what the Acura hour labor rate is at your area but here in Northern CA, it's $175 a hour!
