At this rate, when I do have kids and I start to teach them how to drive, are there going to be any manuals left. They are already hard to find in a lot as is.
I think CVTs will replace manuals and autos. They are lighter, have fewer moving parts, and offer better performance and economy. Back when they first came out, I drove one of the old Audi 1.8T CVTs. It was awesome. The software simulated a 6-speed automatic when you weren't WOT. But in sport mode, it just pegged the tach at the torque peak until you let up on the gas. That is really sweet, and the acceleration was impressive once I was under way.

Eventually yes...but currently they aren't that strong yet to accomidate higher power output applications. That's why you tend to see them in Civic's, Murano's, and yes as you mentioned some Audi's.

Personally I drive a manual because I feel a part of the actually driving experience that way. In an automatic the car does all the work, which is nice for most people, but I like to be part of the action. No transmission in the world would make me want to give up my clutch.

I think with stick also some people get it and some dont. I tried teaching my sis-in-law how to drive stick and she just wasnt getting it. Maybe more pratice would have helped, but I think you need to have a certian amount of coordination to get it right.

Took me a bit to get it but I was learning on Land Rover and Audi manuals. The land Rover clutch you had to almost stand on to make it go in, and anyone who's driven a stick audi can understand how tricky it is for a beginner manual driver to figure out when that retarded clutch is gonna grab. IMO bit to much travel for a beginner. The car that really helped me get comfortable was a toyota tacoma with 250,000 miles on it. Looked like shit. Drove like a dream. Team Japan kicks ass.

I just visited today the California Fuel Cell Partnership and Toyota's got a demo vehicle there ($3-4 million mind you) that basically has no tranny in it. These are cars that use hydrogen fuel cells to generate an electric current to supply an electric motor. They are really neat in that fact and very very quite and smooth. But the main point I wanted to point out is it's an electrical motor and simply as you go higher, the motor just spins faster. No tranny.

My friend's, enjoy your manuals while you can because future holds to the possiblity of finding one to be very very rare. They are already the case in many vehicles (ie., Toyota 4Runner, no manual option available when back in 1990 half of the Runners on the lot where manual).

I'm hoping to get a 6MT as well although I've never owned a manual and will definitely stall it a lot. I have always wanted one so I'm going to get it for sure, I just have to find one.

That is great,......you should be able to pick it up pretty quickly. If you have never driven one before though, I would recommend you get someone to show/teach you how to do it properly and explain things. You can do a search on here as well, as there have been other threads which have touched upon ways of learning etc,......for ex,...practicing on an incline. If you already know, and just know you would stall because you are not used to it,....dont worry at all. You will be shifting like a pro in no time. You will really enjoy having a MT.

I have driven two MT cars before. Both times I was being taught and guided so I understand the process and know what to do but obviously I'm not used to it. Maybe I should try and do some practicing before I get a TSX. Thanks for the advice West6MT.

you'll be fine...

ya, if you access to a mt, practicing can do no harm before picking up your car.

if anything, you'd probably have to get used to the angles of the car (i.e. high rear end) more than the actual mechanics of driving a mt.

I stalled mine once a few months ago, I don't remember the details but I was suprised I did that because I had the car for over 20k miles at that point and hadn't had any mishaps up to that point. The TSX is a very easy(and fun) manual to drive.

Never. Been driving a stick since I started driving at 14. The TSX's is easiest of all to operate of the cars I've owned/driven.
