How do you curb wheels?

So I have always asked myself this. How on earth do all these people in the car scene curb their wheels? We are suppose to take good care of our cars, wheels, etc. I've owned six cars and a lot more sets of wheels and have yet to smack a curb. I'm thinking of buying my first set of used wheels. Yet after searching through the forum, it's very hard to find a set of wheels (OEM and even aftermarket) that do not have curb rash. How does this happen........when I park, turn or whatever I always make sure my wheels don't come close to the curb. What's your view on the subject?

I'm on teh same boat, I haven't curbed a wheel yet (knock on wood), but most of the time it occurs when people need to park on the streets and parallel park.

Another thing I've noticed is that sometimes its the friends or family of the person who curb the wheels. I witnessed my friends wife curb the SHIT out of his wheels (he wasn't there, thank god...).

I try my best and be careful, some people on the other hand...

I also don't know why anyone would curb a wheel. I know how, but it's so easy to avoid so I don't know why.

S**t happens. Besides parallel parking, not taking a RIGHT turn wide enough to clear the curb.

Yeah I mean I guess I know how it can happen. Yet just not how much it does. It seems it's hard to even find a used set of wheels with no curb marks.

I would cry and cry and prolly cry some more ha.

I've done it once. I was taking a right onto a very narrow road when I spotted an on coming car. My plan was to take a tight right, and clear the curb. Problem was, I didn't realize it wasn't a curb, but rather a curb inlet. As such, instead of clearing the curb, I rubbed the cement overhang of the inlet.

You can't really notice unless you walk up to it, but my night was ruined none the less.

I've crubbed my WedsSports SA-70 twice, both could have been avoided if I paid more attention. There was some tall grass covering the crub and I didn't know and drove right into it and 2nd time was when I was really sleepy and had to pull over to the crub to let another car pass, I pulled in too much and hit the crub.

my local bank of america's drive through doesn't have any markings where the curb ends - the lane is so narrow that you can't see it (not painted yellow, no pole, nothing) - so, i come out, turn left out of bank and scrape, turns out the lane/curb extends a good 30 feet for no reason, and when i got out to assess the damage, i notice the curb all torn up from hundreds of other poor souls - it sounds dumb, but it happens to the most cautious people...

Sometimes you have to park so close to the curb that you're just about touching it. Example of this is Mott street in Chinatown. If you're not close, you're going to be missing a passenger side mirror when you come back.

Ahh I forgot about the bank drive drive throughs. I work at a local bank and people nail the hell out of the curb leaving each day. So many tire marks on it. I just cringe when I see a nice car about to pull out.

I've curbed each of my wheels once. In all instances, it was a result of not paying attention, being in a rush, being distracted, or being intoxicated. Curbing your wheels sucks and is one of the most frustrating experiences because it's a mistake that you can only blame on yourself. I haven't curbed a wheel in over a year since I started being incredibly anal about parking, though.

I read a tire review where some guy said he curbed his wheels from "shallow pot holes?"

Maybe that is possible? I am skeptical...

Different ways and everything. All depends but I have to say the majority of the time when it's the actual owner of the car is that they are usually distracted or careless. I've curbed my OEM rim once but because it was at my new place and I wasn't used to the side steps going up the side of the driveway. While pulling in I knicked it since i need to go in at an angle and didn't realize it so I was more or less careless and paid for it. It's a minor scrape at least. But yea, a lot of ppl do it parallel parking like in DC, if you're too far out your car will get f'd up.

Sometimes wheel curbing sometimes happen in parking lots, like underground lots and structures, and since those curbs aren't really made for road, they often have very narrow openings, or they are at or near 90 degress (not rounded). Usually, they are poorly lighted also. Not pay full attention to them then make a right or left turn on one of those..and bye bye rims!

Guess I just pay more attention than the average joe! The sound alone would kill me.

It's one of the worst sounds ever.

Front lip scraping an incline is also an unfortunate sound.

First time I've ever curb one of my wheels was the day after I got my TL. I went from a miata to the TL and being MUCH larger I didn't anticipate my turn radius correctly and slightly curbed my rear passenger wheel. Hasn't happened since nor before, it was only because I wasn't completely acclimated to the change in vehicle yet.

I've nailed my downpipe right off my turbo on a bump in the road. Sounded crazy and saw some sparks in the rear view.

It's a lot different going from my CR to the TSX. You sit up a lot higher in the TSX and the car feels a whole lot bigger.

Apparently that was not the case when I went to Orlando last year. I scraped a ton more than I did in New York

Most wheels that are curbed are on the passenger side. Normally the rear passenger. Especially if you let your girl drive it to starbucks. Starbucks has a 2" curb to get in the parking lot and if you let the girl drive there, your rear passenger tire will have a curb mark on it. Starbucks + Girl driver = curbed wheels. OEM tires are easy not to curb, 45 series tires and below are so easy to curb. I wish all curbs were padded with cotton.
