Gas Gauge

Gas Gauge
hello to all acura experts. a question....I filled my tank up yesterday (about 15.4 gallons and usually it fills up at 13 gallons so I topped it off) and right now I have driven 90 miles and the gas gauge is still on the full line. usually, after 50 to 60 miles, it begins to dip down. I am worried. does topping off the tank caused a problem?
any help you all can give me is appreciated.

Gas gauge seem pretty accurate along with the trip computer. I usually run it until it clicks off and then add another gallon. I usually average about 13-14.5 gallon during fill ups. I might add a little more if going on a road trip out of town. The most I ever put in my TSX was 16.2 gallons. The trip computer was pretty accurate with less than 20 miles until empty.
I had a hard time at Sam's Club topping off with their pumps, it took me 10-12 mins just to get to the 16.2 gallons in the car.

Let me help you!
Topping off your car is a bad thing (refer to PACman's link).
The gas gauge isn't usually very accurate. However, on one of my accords, I used to top it off all the time (when I was younger). I guess it messed up the floater somehow (the float floats on your gas to tell your car how much gas it has). It stays at full for a while, and then eventually you'll notice suddenly it's a few clicks below full. I guess it gets stuck, and it takes a while for it to fall back down? *shrugs* I guess I constantly pushed the float beyond the limit it's designed for. Anyway, now I just use my odometer...I know how many miles my accord can go before I truly need to get gas.
As for my TSX though, it seems the most accurate of all the cars I've owned. From 100% full to about 45%, it goes down regularly as expected. Once below 45%, the rate of descent increases just slightly (I guess it tries to report less gas than actual, so that I won't push it and actually run out of gas).
I wouldn't worry Michelle. The full line on your gas guage references a certain depth of gas in your gas tank. Since you overfilled it, it takes a while for the fuel level to go down enough for the float to reach the depth required for the full line on the gas guage. (The gas gauge isn't designed to report anything beyond full.) I wouldn't top off your gas though...I'm trying to save the environment for my future kid's kid's kid's kid's kid's kid....

the total volume of the gas tank is 17gal in the TSX right?
when the E light comes on and I fill up till it clicks.. it's always about 12-12.5gal on the receipt.
so with 4.5gal left in the tank the light comes on?

I would trust the trip computer instead of taking a chance and assuming you have an extra 3-4 gallons when the light turns on. When my light come on, I usually only have 40-50 miles left on my trip compter DTE (under 2 gallons) and it has been very accurate so far on my 06.

usually when my car is at the E line..i fill up like 13-14 gallons...not much at all. So yeah, i guess it's safe to say that you have about 3 gallons left...but i wouldnt really push it unless you have to. I have an '04 no navi 6-speed...just incase that may have something to do with it.

I wouldn't recommend topping off the gas tank, but I have always done it w/o a problem for years. So I'll likely continue that habit with my TSX. Best thing is to top off moments before a long trip b/c after 20 or so miles (~20 mins) your gas will have room to expand in the tank. You having travelled 90 miles with the gauge on 'F' is normal only if you top if off, like you admitted. I was able to squeeze 100 miles before the gauge began its decent.
Hope this helps!
