Freakin HOT gear knob -- help?

So it is finally getting hot here in Boise, ID. The gear knob on my 6mt gets really hot even with a windshield sun shade and such as the sun likes to peak through the side windows.

So I am considering replacing the gear knob with something made from leather or maybe carbon fiber (got to be better then metal).

Does anyone know what size of the threads are for a replacement shifter knob?

Also, does the shifter knob just unscrew from the shaft?

Thanks for the help.

Yes there's a lock nut at the bottom of the knob that you'll have to turn with a wrench clockwise as you turn the knob counter clockwise to unscrew it. You probably won't find a threaded aftermarket knob. Most of them just slide on and use setscrews to secure it to the shaft. Other knobs in the Acura/Honda family are likely compatible. I think Sturm has a TL-S knob on his which is leather.

keep a small rag in the armrest. Toss it over the knob when you get out.

No sweat. Some S2000 guys have been complaining about this for years. One member actually started a thriving business with leather accessories the the S2000. The Billet shift knob seems to be uncomfortable for some S2k owners too. Check out the Knob Sock Personally, I've never had a problem with the knob getting hot. After all, shouldn't you take pride in having the 6-mt shift pattern 'branded' into your palm!

Dr. Evil, I also have a CL type-S knob. If you would like the OEM knob that is leather wraped I'd be willing to part with it for a small fee. If you intrested PM me. I give you a good deal.

Sturm's solution.....

I've been looking for a solution to this hot-cold knob problem, too. There's a guy who sells "plood" knobs that sort-of match the the fake wood on the dashboard on e-bay. I've also looked at the 6-speed knobs from the Accord Coupe and the RSX, and neither looks like it would be much better. So I'm still looking for my leather or plastic knob....

Will that fit the shifter? The base looks too skinny, those were made for autos

I use nothing! The S2000 shifter goes straight into the gearbox. No cables to slow heat transmission, and here in Hawaii I'd imagine it gets as hot as anywhere short of Death Valley. I don't see what the big deal is. Once you start moving, the airflow cools everything down and all is good.

But how cold does it get in Hawaii?

I'm actually more annoyed by fact that it's an ice cube in the winter.

Dude I used to live in Hawaii. It does not get hot, it just gets humid. The two years that I was there it never got above 90.

I live in Visalia California now and the summers get up to 112F during July and August. When the sun hits metal at that heat it scorches your hands.

If you decide to get a different one, would you be willing to sell me yours?

hi guys

while we are on this subject, just departing from this slightly, i'm considering purchasing the tsx 6mt but dislike the knob as it is too thin and small. i like the feel of the tl 6mt knob. can this be changed and would they have the same thread size?

would appreciate any input.

thanks guys.

shelltox, you can use pretty well any aftermarket knob out there. They usually don't thread on but use setscrews to hold it in place. If you can wait another month or so I am going to be machining some shift knobs for a few of our members from solid 304 stainless which will be a little bigger than the stock knob.

Shelltox, try one of these.
The Voodoo Magnum is what a lot of the S2000 guys upgrade to. I am not positive they work, but I'm pretty sure it would fit. You might try emailing the guy Rick, he's a good guy and will help you out.
