For the first time in almost 3 years....
For the first time in almost 3 years....
The TSX felt horribly, horribly underpowered.
I was on my way to work this morning in the left lane of a two lane road. There was a fairly slow moving Civic coupe in front of me. Traffic was pretty heavy so there no way around it.
Finally, after a few minutes the Civic gets a chance to jump over to the right lane and does so. Now I had a few minutes back noticed a Cayenne directly behind me. As the Civic moves over I gun it. We both pass the Civic. As I'm pratically flooring it I see the Cayenne change lanes in the corner of my eye, still flooring it I'm helpless as I see "Cayenne Turbo" shoot past.
Its as if I had hit a brick wall. Its as if I wasn't even moving. This thing shot by so fast I almost couldn't believe what I had saw.
I felt about 3 inches tall and almost wanted to pull over and start walking.
I know not many cars stand a chance against 450HP and 457lb-ft but I have to believe I would have had a fighting chance in something more powerful.
But thinking back this really is the first time I felt inadequate in my TSX. Thats not to say its ever felt fast, but I was never humiliated like I was this morning.

Well, at least you know your TSX would whoop that SUV on some curves!
Oh, wait... umm... never mind
The Cayenne is all Porsche when it comes ot performance. Don't feel bad about it. You could have three or four TSXs for the same money.
I have a friend who's had a Cayenne S for about a year and a half. He's ready to get rid of it for a Lexus GS. The Porsche has been in the shop 6 times for different electrical problems. He was hoping he could get out of it on the lemon law, but it was never the same problem. He can't stand the electrical problems, and they are common.

No, this means I'm praying to the Honda gods for a 2.3L Turbo w/SH-AWD in the 08 TSX.

Being passed wasn't the point, its the way I was passed.
This reminds me of something else actually. You know those roads that go from 2 lanes to 1 immediately after a set of lights. When the light turns green I never attempt to outrun the car beside me anymore unless I'm absolutely sure I can beat them. Kinda depressing too.
I'm done with modding. At this point I 've realized I'll need the Supercharger to get me levels of power I'm looking for and even then its still somewhat low on tourque. Not to mention the 5-6K Canadian price tag.
And it will still have the wrong tansmission. Tough it out (if you can call it that) with the TSX for another 3-4 years and see whats available at that point.

not to mention a lightly modded evo or sti would still own a SC tsx.

But, I've been in it a lot -- that thing can really accelerate while rolling on dry pavement, and can out-accelerate almost all of cars I've ever been in. You have nothing to be ashamed of...

I thought the Cayenne was actually a pretty good off-roader? Can't remember if it uses the same 4x4 or AWD system as the Toureg which apprently is a very good off-roader.

Did your tranny downshift?

I had a much different experience against a Porsche Cayenne Turbo...
Occasionally, I'll take the TSX on some back roads around Newport Coast here in SoCal. I happen to have a friend who lives a mile or two away from Kobe Bryant. I sometimes get a kick out of counting the MB's and BMW's at a single stoplight. Needless to say, Ferraris, Porsches, MB's and every other yuppie car is on every street corner.
One of my favorite stretches of road happens to be Newport Coast S/W bound to PCH where there are very few lights and there's an immaculate view of Crystal Cove State Park with the ocean looming in the horizon. Traffic averages 75 mph+ and I have never seen a cop on that street.
What started as an ordinary drive in Newport Beach turned out to be a thriller. I noticed a Cayenne Turbo driving as aggressive as me in my rear view mirror until him and I reached a pack of slow cars. When we got daylight, I pulled the ol' 5th-to-3rd downshift into my sweetspot of 6000 RPM. My intake roared into redline as I could hear the sweet sound of the Cayenne's exhaust whizzing past me. Needless to say, I was outmatched as he pulled on me very similar to how you described your experience. When we reached triple digits, the wuss let off and I did my ricer flyby.
My heart continued pounding as I let off at around 120 MPH.
There's no shame in losing to a car costing 3x as much.... As a matter of fact, one of my favorite internet videos to this day is the classic Chris' ITR vs. Ferrari 355 where he got smoked.
The driver / passenger still loved the experience.

The thing about both the Touareg and the Cayenne is that they suck in the snow. Weight + wide tires = sledding. We went over the North Cascades Hwy. right after it opened and it was the worst (and scary) drive I've ever been on -- and that's saying something. 4wd does not equal the ability to stop, and we were creeping through the mountains. The TSX does much better in the snow.

on my face.Same thing happened to me 3 months after I got my TSX (late 2003).... The X5 was behind me in an on ramp, merging into highway portion where it is an incline, once I merged on I gun it (after checking the rear mirror, the X5 is still behind me), after blink of an eye, it disappeared from the mirror and the next thing I saw was it shooting by as if I was watching it go by from the side of the road.
That was when I first realized the TSX isn't a fast car
It was a porsche turbo after all, don't feel too bad about it.
I was talking to my buddy from the dealership the other day, and he said some of the mechanics at the dealership are speculating the possibility of integrating the future RDX K23 turbo on to the K24. That may also be an alternative solution to the supercharger.

When (or if) a K pro comes out, look out. I have a feeling the k24 would be a beast of an engine NA or FI.

At least you have the 5 speed. I have the 2005 automatic.
I will say this. I much rather have a slow car that is dependable, durable, and reliable. Cars that are very fast just don't seem to last. The more powerful you make the car , the more problems you ask for. Sure it is a lot of fun. But I have had it with fast cars braking down on me and leaving me stranded. I was a previous Ford Mustang 5.0 owner. Never again. It was great while it worked. But shit everything broke down on that car. Some of the many problems included blown head gasket, bad water pump, leaking power steering pump, fuel leaks, bad starter, bad starter solenoid, bad clutch. T top water leaks. Oil leaks. I have only scratched the surface. It only had 80,000 miles when I said sayonara. THE HELL WITH THAT!!!!!!!! NEVER AGAIN. Give me a slow bulletproof reliable car any day.
Ok. Let me get off my rant box. But who else feels the same way?? Feel free to post.

Perhaps if he had the 06 AT things would have been a lot different. lol
06 TSX's owners unite! lol
I can remember back when I had a Civic CVCC and was racing a Mercedes and a Porsche on the 401. The traffic was just busy enought that they could not just race away. It became a race of who could pick the most opportune holes. I held my own. Imagine how they felt. (BTW - now that I am old and wise I don't recommend highway racing)

Excited
