Extended Warranty...
Extended Warranty...
I'm curious.. Does Acura/Honda offer the option to extend the manufacturer's warranty once it has ended or near its end? I have the ability to buy mechanical breakdown insurance from my credit union but they only offer up to 6yrs/75k miles or 6yrs/100k miles....which doesn't seem so good.. it is a lot of money to pay for only two extra years.
I've never been a big fan of extended warranties. I think it's a far better idea to contribute the money to a "rainy day fund" where you can earn interest and still have access to it if you need to fix something.
The only time I've really agreed with someone buying an extended warranty on a car is with my Dad's SLK. It was like $1600 for two years unlimited mileage.
The thing has been in the shop 4 times having the roof repaired under the factory warranty and I'm sure it would be a $1000+ in parts/labor for each of those visits. There's just so many moving parts and hundreds of limit switches that trying to keep everything working right is tough.
Our car is pretty simple in comparison.

NJTSXMan,
The extended AcuraCare is 7 yrs/100k. I think you can add it after purchase, but I have no idea what the latest you could go is. I bought mine at purchase time with the car. It is fully transferable to a new owner - or I can even get a refund on it if I trade the car in before the standard 4 yr/48k is up.
I do agree in principle with Dan about extended warranties though - be careful what you pay for it - you can get them pretty cheap. Even on eBay from Acura dealers...

I got the extended warranty on my TSX at its 1-yr birthday for about $1100, I think. Some dealers only offer third party warranties, so make sure you are getting something from Acura; otherwise, it will be a pain to have things covered and paid for.
I got my extended warranty because I plan on keeping the car for a long time, and seeing the number of problems that have come up in other TSX's, I'd rather be safe (Acura parts are some of the most expensive OEM stuff). My car is 19 months old and already has close to 27,000 miles.

I purchased a warranty from Warrantydirect.com PM me if you have any questions, there's inlcuding the emmissions components for 7 years 100,000 miles and it's a wear and tear warranty, not mechnicaly break down.
why son't you try www.acuraofmissionviejo.com/ last time I was on the site they offered $1050 for 7yrs/100k. I might be wrong. But its worth a try to find out.
I was looking at 5yrs/100k. They quoted me $890. I can get them before the meter reads 48k. Man, I got mine 5 1/2 months ago and already the meter read 16.8k. Good luck hope it helps.

I purchased a used TSX w. certification although I also purchased the additional extended Acura warranty which wraps the entire car at 100k or 7yrs. I think the warranty is worth it esp. since I have a NAV which can go bad after prolonged exposures to temperature extremes. In new cars like Acuras, its usually the little things (lights, wiring, plastics, etc.) that go bad before the engine and tranny. I got my warranty for $660.

In New York I got an Acura Tsx 2005 for about 278000 about and my dad argued about the warrenty in the price 1500. We managed to get it for 1295 no tax free splash guards, wheel locks and 2 year of free oil changes. Well it wasn't bad becasue they were offering the 7 year warrenty 100,000 miles.
oh this is (paragon Acura Dealer)

7yrs/100k averages about $1300. I was first offered $1800 (dumb ass) then lowered to $1350 for the extended. If I negotiated more, I prolly can get it down to $1100 but I had enough of negotiating for 1 day.

Guess it's a good idea to purchase the extended warranty in my case.
You can buy the extended warranty up until the factory warranty expires. It's more expensive the longer you wait, but the cost difference is negligible (maybe $100 to $150 more if you buy the warranty after a 2 or 3 yrs). As others have mentioned, check Curry Acura and Acura of Mission Viejo for good deals on extended warranties. They offer 7 yr 100K mile factory backed Acura warranties for about $1000 or $1100.
IMO it is best to wait before you buy the extended warranty because:
1) If you decide to sell your car before the factory 4 yr warranty expires, the extended warranty is somewhat wasted. Granted, an argument can be made that having an extended warranty could increase the price you get for your car, but it's not going to be $1000 more.
2) Your car may get into an accident and get totaled before the standard warranty expires. In this scenario, the insurance company may not reimburse the cost of your warranty to you.
3) After factoring in interest, there isn't much benefit to buying the extended warranty at the time you buy the car. Ex: warranty costs $1000 now, but $1,150 near the end of the 4 yr factory warranty period. If you invest 1000 at 4%/yr w/o compounding, you'll still be at $1,160 at the end of the 4 yr period. You can buy the warranty at that time and have $1000 of liquid cash sitting in your pocket rather than in Honda's pockets.
4) It is next to impossible to get the dealer that sold you the car to sell you the same 7 yr 100K mile warranty for the $1000-1100 that Curry Acura and Acura of Mission Viejo charges. Had my local dealer offered to sell me the warranty for $1000, I would've probably bought it when I got my car. Unfortunately, they would only offer me the 7 yr 75K mile warranty for $1500! And that was if I bought other stuff like the interior fabric protection pkg, etc. Fuck that. I knew I could get the exact same Acura extended warranty online for much less.
