This engine surprises me

I know the TSX aint no rocket. Its got ample power for sure ... but compared to some of the 6cyl monsters we have out there right now it could definately feel ... just OK in power.

But I swear every once in a while this engine really surprises me. Whethere its a quick pass, merge, whatever ... sometimes it pulls like I didnt think it would pull. It takes me by surprise and puts a smile on my face.

The engine just loves to be revved... I find myself hitting the i-vtec a lot more than I used to.

What continues to amaze me about this engine is how fast it revs (which is an underrated metric of engine performance and gearing). Under wide open throttle, it gets from 4500 to 7000 in NO TIME, especially in 1st or 2nd gear.

...And, yes, it puts that silly smile on my face

How long is the break in period? I must admit, although the TSX does not have a payer of catching my GSR, the I-VTEC is a lot smoother than my GSR.

Is your gs-r stock? If so the TSX and gs-r are just about equal in 0-60 (mid to low 7's) and 1/4 mile (mid 15's). The TSX just doesnt "feel" as fast.

Could be a drivers race there.

On the highway, I can particularly feel strong, refined, and smooth acceleration. Around town on city streets, there's little sense of the engine's power.

My GSR is definitely not stock plus it seems to be one of the faster GSRs I've seen. So far I've driven the BMW 325i, the TSX, and the IS300 and my GSR could smoke them all.

The 4cyl on the TSX surprises me all the time, not to mention all of the people that ride with me as well. Not only is it a fun car to drive, but I can get around other cars and what not without much effort by the car, and it will get up into the higher RPM's really quickly. I've almost got 12,000 miles on mine now, and the engine sounds awesome!

I'm a big K24A2 fan.

Lots of torque for a 4-cylinder, and the high revs let it run shorter gears so that you get more torque multiplication. I think the engine performs more like a V6 than a 4-cylinder, all while maintaining the lighter weight and tighter packaging of an I-4. It would be tough to pry my right foot away from my V6, but if any 4-banger could do it, it would be the K24A2.

In addition to the flat torque curve, I think that the low Cd (0.27) contributes to the smooth acceleration and feeling of power for highway driving/passing. The same engine in a less slippery skin could feel a lot more anemic.

The Cd figure I found for the Mazda6 is 0.31. Most people who have driven both say the 6 doesn't feel like it pulls as hard as it should and the higher Cd could certainly be a contributing factor to that.

With the TSX, the appeal is in the complete package as it performs in the real world, not the specs as they appear on paper.

Interestingly, the Cd published for the Accord Euro is 0.26. Only reason for that that I can think of is that it is probably due to the smaller narrower tires.

I wonder if the Accord Euro gets better gas mileage? Oh, but the K24 engine is a bit different.

I wonder how you convert liters per 100 km to miles per gallon?

miles/gallon = 1 / (1/100 * liters/100 km * (1 gallons / 3.7854118 liters) * (1.609344 km/1 miles) )

For 7 liters/100 km, this comes out to 33 mpg or so...

100km = 62.14 miles
1 US gallon = 3.78 L

So to convert x L/100Km to mpg (US) =

62.14 / (x /3.78)

Simplified and rounded to 235/x

Example: 10.0 L/100Km = 235/10 = 23.5 mpg.

Close enough for discussion. (But not cigars).

Actually, that's an excellent simplification and accurate to 3 significant figures -- good enough for anything but the best Cuban cigars...

(Anal-retentive types can do 235.2145843/x)

The TSX has this lovely cigar storage bin in the center console, but no cigar tray. What gives?

maybe it makes you feel faster than you actually are going?? 1/4 miles and 0-60 all suggest the TSX is not a peppy car. adequate but low to mid range is nothing to talk abouit.

it all depends on your frame of reference. Is a4 1.8t peppy, is a 325, c230? It's just as peppy as all of those.

Only in the lowest speeds in the first gear do I find the TSX to be not so peppy. It takes but a second or two to venture beyond that and get plenty peppy.

The TSX is no Corvette, and neither are the TSX's competition.

Mid-range is great in this car.

0-60 isnt fast..you're right. But once you are moving the car is quick...and surprises me ... thats my whole point. The 0-60 is misleading in this car..because its alot quicker than the time suggests...its just sluggish off the line.

As for feel ... if anything the car actually "Feels" slower than it actually is most of the time.

gilbo...i'll watch for you in my rear view.

The best 0-60 for the 6MT was C&D at 7.2 , the worst was about a second more than that. I'd say mid 7's is a reasonable statement.
