Engine Sound

Hi
I am new to this forum...i am thinking of purchasing a TSX after totalling my VW Jetta 1.8T.
I was wondering what the engine sounds like. Does have the typical 4 cylinder engine note or does it have a more deeper engine note typical of a V6, inline 6, etc. I am very curious since the TSX has a rather large 4 cylinder engine. Thank you all in advance for your reply.

Just a high rev sound like a typical 4 cyl. It's a little deeper than civics and other cars with < 2.0L engines, but it's not a particularly strong sound.

I know you probably will, but you should test drive one. Its pretty hard to explain the sound over the internet. I would say it has a deeper note - most people do not assume that the TSX is a 4cyl after driving around in one. Im sure you'll like it coming from a Jetta.

Welcome!

Here are two sound clips from TSXs: (they aren't stock, but only a minor mod)

It's a honda 4-cylinder, it's going to sound like a 4-cylinder when you step on it; however it is remarkably smooth for an I4 and runs quietly with no fuss. Even my boss was surprised my TSX had an I4 instead of V6.

Here's a video clip complete with engine sounds:

...and sorry I don't speak Japanese so I can't tell you what the driver is saying.

Well..if you put an Injen Intake on...it has a pretty mean...sound...IMO..

Did you plan on doing mods if you get one?

Its remarkably composed for a 4 cylinder.

Heck its a lot quieter than my '97 TL 6 cylinder (intake resonator removed though)

It has somewhat of a deeper note than most I4's , but it has nowhere the tone of a 6cylinder.

It is a very smooth engine, and you will see the difference day and night with the 1.8T as far as smoothness goes.

Sauceman, can I respectfully disagree...Our I4 doesn't come close to sounding like an I6 (a certain bavarian 3.0L comes to mind), but there are some V6's out there that in my opinion, our TSX blows them away (pun intended ;-) )

At first my car was very quiet, just a low pitch hum.

At high rpm it whirls so quiet like a sewing machine, amazing motor.

Cold air intake is very loud when you open the throttle but CAI noise
can be avoided when you need to be quiet by running of the top 1/4 throttle which is easy to do with this motor. I did some other mods that quieted the CAI.

At 28k miles my exhaust is getting louder. I am changing to fujitsubo exhaust
soon.

I don't think you're disagreeing with sauceman because he's saying the same thing.

Yep, we are all at an agreement here. Re-read my post again.

What did you do to help quiet your intake?

I have an Injen intake and it's a little too loud for me.
It's not loud at all at low RPMs but above 4 or 5k it's pretty loud.

Dynanat the inside the inner fender and around the lower end of
the intake tube where hidden inside the inner fender.

Cut open the fog cover. This made a difference for noise.

Installed rubber washer between the lower mount to the inner fender.

Installed rubberized washers ( from Lowes ) on the upper mounts.

Be sure you have separation between the intake tube and the
manifold inside of the silicone hose. And the two tube inside the middle
hose.

Hope that helps with your noise.

You can always get one of these for the turbo sound.

Actually, you need to get two, one for each exhaust tip.

That's hilarious...

The things people will do to make it appear as though they have actual performance mods...

I think the car has a pleasant growl once the engine and exhaust break in a little, it's not obnoxious but it's sort of sporty.
