Drive-by-wire Throttle System

What the hell is the Drive-by-wire Throttle System. It has been puzzling me ever since i heard it. I figured that it was good but i dont know what it means can some one answer my question.

electronic system by means of sensors, instead of a mechanical throttle.

Instead of having a cable attached between the gas pedal and the throttle body of the fuel injection system, you have a potentiometer (variable resistor) at the gas pedal that sends electrical signals to a servo motor on the throttle body to tell it how much to open/close. This allows a software (variable) dependant response to gas pedal inputs vs. a fixed response when the system was cable based.
