DIY newbie

Hey guys i just got raped at the dealership for $309 for my 30,000 maintenance. I saw alot of things on there that sounded like stuff i could do (ie. new air filter, oil filter, check hoses, etc)

Is there a good resource i can check out for guiding me through these fixes?
and ill take any helpful hints!!

thanks

Steve

changing the air filter and oil filter i think are in the owner's manual. Even though you can get most of the info from doing searches on these forums, so it may be overkill, but for around $85 from www.helminc.com you can get the Service manual that tells you EVERYTHING- from oil changes, to rebuilding the engine and tranny. i like to have the FSM handy for torque specs, wear limits, etc.

yeah, it's called a Helms manual (www.helminc.com). shows you all that in baby steps + plus the tools required. get it, it's the best $$ you'll ever spend.

^^^^ Get the Helms manual! If you plan on doing any electrical work get the electrical troubleshooting manual as well. It tells you exactly what every wires goes to and the color of it. Well worth the money!

i might have to pick this up too.

alternatively, go to honda instead of acura, or to a regular mechanic if you dont want to do it yourself.

it all depends on what? I thought the same ways you did. I wanted to get fog lights installed from honda but they couldnt do it because they are only trainned to do honda's only. They had to call and get info from acura so...They were going to charge me same amount of labor as acura.

It's for buying parts or maybe getting services done like oil changes.

Fog light installation isn't a common thing...of course the Acura dealer will be more familiar with out the TSX's bumper and wiring works.

sorry, i didnt mean go to honda for all services. things such as fog light installation, or anything that would require TSX specific knowledge, go to acura. but for things that can be done by anyone, like oil change, tire rotation, checking breaks, etc, go to honda. the labor is around $30-$40/hr cheaper, so you save at least that. parts are cheaper (and identical), and i would bet the oil is cheaper.

If you're going to do this you might as well go to a reputable non-dealership mechanic and save even more money. Make sure they sign your maintenance journal (and when you do it yourself, make sure you sign your own!)
