Did I damage my engine?

Last night, I stopped on a long open deserted stretch of road, and really wanted to open it up.

I switched my 5AT into sport-shift mode, and slammed down on the accelerator. I was under the impression that it would automatically shift once I reached redline. However, the RPM's actually reached halfway into the red zone (7500). I then felt a strong hesitation, almost as if the gas cut itself off.

I then eased off, and drove at slow, normal speeds. It seems to be running fine now.

First of all, is this normal? Is there a cutoff once the RPM's reach a certain level? And more importantly, is there a chance I could have f**ked up my engine or tranny?

This is the first and only time I've ever really drove the car really hard.

Any responses are greatly appreciated.

I'm think that you would actually have to use your sport shift (unlike some other hondas) to shift since it won't shift for you. And it's fine. Don't worry cause you just hit the revv limiter. No biggie.

You probably hit the fuel cutoff - not something you want to do too often, but you're probably OK.

I suggest you read your owners manual to learn more about your car and how it works.

I just got fuel cut off on 2nd gear this morning when I tried to pass a Convette still need more pratice on tsx to know when is the lastest shifting point after redline. And I already able to shift @7700rpm on my lude.
I had bad experience on a Pontiac Bonneville. When it cut off the fuel, it cut off the power of the car! steering lock up, no power brake and the car running on 100 miles/hr and I need to slide the car to the ditch in order to stop it! After that my family & I never never never buy a domestic! not even drive it!

I'm sorry. The correct answer is "yes, yes, no".

OC: If you put the shifter in the SS gate, you have to shift it yourself. Otherwise leave it in D if you want the car to do it.

learn to drive stick then you

so just out of curiosity, why would you think that the car would shift for you if you were in "sport shift" mode?

i really don't know, since i have a 6MT.

but your engine is ok, just hit the rev limiter which isn't the greatest thing to do, but youre engine will be ok.

just don't keep hitting it continously for a long time...

different "sport shifts" have different behaviors. my friend's "sport shift" 03 tiburon v6 forces a shift right before redline.

I like it when people start a topic and admit to something so dumb, and then never post in that thread again

It's not a dumb question. If you didn't know what a fuel cut was you'd probably be freaked out too.

I didnt mean it was a dumb question, I said that the act was dumb. Really, what should one expect when they put it in SS mode? When I first test drove a TSX, they didnt have any 6MT's on the lot, so I test drove an AT. The first thing I did was put it in SS mode and never had a problem with the concept of actually having to shift it.

i've hit my rev limiter many times (10+ probably), but never on purpose. it started occuring after I got my CAI which drowns out the vtec sound at WOT. I hit it probably 4 times in one autocross lap I did, you'd be surprised how easy it is when you're accelerating around a turn in 1st gear and have more important things to think about.

I don't know why they can't create a soft cutoff... one that cuts power gradually instead of wham!

Perhaps some people don't want that, those who want maximum performance (and who for some reason don't want a stick).

Actually I think it makes sense that the SS doesn't upshift for you. There are situations where you want to hug the redline and not go to the next gear.
