Concern For Automatic Tranny
I am hearing this "clanking" noise whenever I switch from Drive to Reverse or vice-versa on my automatic tranny. I am a little bit concerned about the noise because this is my first automatic vehicle. All my prior cars have had manual transmission. I don't know if the noise is regular with automatic cars. I just need a little input from owners of auto TSX's.

I'm pretty sure I read something about that in the owners manual. If my memory is correct (not a safe bet) it said this was normal. You might want to give the transmission section in the manual a close look.

i used to heard shifting sound from generations of at accords...all these sound can be heard from out side, but not inside: if you shift at a slop from P, on level from R to D.... but if you concern, contact dealer....

I also had an AT Accord, and this sound occured too, but considering it's a Honda AT, it's rough, but sturdy. I lasted my tranny for 365,000 miles, and it has always done that typical clank, especially in cold weather.

Well, first of all, you can't go from R to D, there is a N in the middle. So where did this sound occur? R to N or N to D?
I haven't heard that on my AT TSX, so I would guess it's not normal?

Doesn't sound normal to me at all. You do come to a complete stop before shifting into or out of reverse don't you? I'd have that puppy checked out and I wouldn't wait.
So all your previous cars were manuals and you chose this vehicle for your first auto? Your sure passed up one of the sweetest-shifting sticks out there.
Cheers,
Jaeger

That is normal for an automatic transmission, it is the noise of the solenoid engaging. Some people may hear it, others may not, or may be used to that noise since they have driven an automatic for a while. On my Sentra it is kind of a "kachunk" type of noise.... my TSX is still on it's way.

I've had a 98 Accord and a 2001 CL and BOTH made the SAME distinct 'clicking' sound when putting the car from DRIVE to REVERSE (and yes, you normally skip over N to get there ! LOL!)
From what I've been told, it's characteristic of Honda Trannys ...
Never was a PROBLEM though .. just a little annoying to HEAR it so pronounced !!

I've been in nothing but Acuras for 15 years -- I guess I'm just used to it!
P.S. Regarding something about this being in the manual, all I know is it's not in the transmission section (not that I saw it, anyway). If anyone really sees it in there, could you tell us where exactly?

I know the sound you are refering to. When I back out of my garage (on a downward slope) and shift into Drive, my car makes a clunk noise. Sounds pretty normal and consistent (does it everday). My auto Jetta made the same noise every morning as well.

Totally normal. My current and past AT Toyota and past AT Honda have always made this noise. It wasnt every time that I engaged the gear, but most of the time. Not to worry.
Actually when I bought my first 'new' car (toyota corolla), I returned to the dealer to ask about the "clunck" after a few days. The service guy told me it was normal. I asked if my car did that cause it was lesser quality. He said nope, and demonstrated the sound on an Avalon sitting in the lot.
