Red face Bye bye TSX.. It's been fun..

yesterday i traded my '04 6spd in. Coming up to 100k on the odo and serious clutch/trans issues causing problems and a bunch of little stuff started breaking. Anyways, long story short, i was about 5 miles from the car dealer when i lost all gears except for 3rd and 4th. (No clue how) Rolled to a stop, found a hole in the trans casing and sh*t load of metal in the fluid. Never hit anything, just been having to force car into gears and/or shut car off at stop lights, put it in gear then start it back up to get going.
Anyways, I went to the totally diff end of the spctrum and picked up an 06 hummer h3. Been wanting one for a while so figured, F it, why not?
It's been fun guys.
Later!!

Wow... major transmission failure? Scary.

Double-wow... an H3 with fuel prices skyrocketing? Silly.

the h3 is more frugal than it's predecessors and only requires 87 octane (damn it's hard playing devil's advocate here). uum, congrats i guess and glad that you're out of a soon-to-be-money-pit-of-a-tranny

Two of my coworkers have had H3's for about a year now. Both of them loved it for the first 6 months and now hate the thing once the newness wore off. The biggest complaint has been the impossibility of seeing what or who you're currently running over which is rapidly being gained upon by the abysmal fuel economy. One of the guys is seriously considering trading in for a hybrid Corolla after another coworker got one.

Your user name is ironic given that your new ride handles like 3 tones of ass. Have fun till the novelty wears off I guess.

I got an 06 H3 when they first came out after my 04 TSX got flooded. I liked it until I found out that i was getting close to 13 mpg rather than the 16 on the EPA estimates. I thought gas was expensive then . That is the reason I have an 06 TSX now. Otherwise I liked the H3.

Good luck with it.

Did they give the H3 to you?

I wouldn't think those things would have much value with $4.00 a gallon gas.

The name, yes, ironic, i just got it.
As far as gas mileage, my "commute" is a 3 mile ride to a Bart station and otherwise i drive a 95 Toyota crapola When i need to beat around. I wish they gave me the H3. I just got a real good deal on and a car that don't have to worry about.
I Loved the TSX but it was just costing me alot of money and i was upside down in it after my wife totalled my s2k. And no, not rich, just barely any bills.

Ouch.

Having ridden in those things a few times the only good thing I've found about them is that they have fairly comfortable seats. I get all sorts of motion sick in the back seats due to the boaty ride and inability to see much out the windows. I very rarely get motion sick.

I hear they're respectable off road but that's a feature 0.0001% of owners will ever test out. I just can't see it as anything but dreadfully impractical in the current and likely future economy.

Hondas transmissions are good for over 200k+. And you bought a GM car.... wow.... american (new) cars are crap. Plus you bought a monster that eats through your wallet and good luck with GMs maintenance.... not a smart move imo.

gas guzzlers are definitely not the way to go anymore, even if you do just drive 3 miles a day. you will be one of the few and the proud on the road. gas prices are only going to go up.

3 miles one way to the Bart station means you almost burn a half a gallon of gas per day.

Yeah, let me rephrase that as "What driving styles should I avoid to prevent my 6MT from grenading at 100k miles?"

Sorry to hear about your exploding transmission.

Good luck with the H3... Like many others already posting, I can't say that would have been my choice either. I hope to replace my TSX (someday) with something that gets substantially better gas mileage.

The main reason I wouldn't get an SUV now, particularily a large one, is because their utility is dubious, the main apeal is the size and the potential to go offroad, which is rarely realized, and those ego/self esteem benefits aren't worth the new and high cost of fueling up to many people. Meanwhile we just happen to be exiting an SUV craze so there are a large number of used SUVs on the market driving their value way down. That's a double whammy.

Minivans and full sized vans are much more efficient pavement oriented cargo vehicles and I expect them to retain value much better than SUVs which use as much gas move half as much stuff, but they will drop a little because a lot of people who don't realy need the space are driving them around now for the same reason people drive SUVs and are going to want something more practical.

As I totally agree with you all on how impractical it is for everyday driving or commuting , I actually will use mine. I'm always borrowing my buddy's trucks to go camping, or towing or go to the beach or snowboarding etc.. My tsx never had enough room and when it did, i could never get to where i wanted to go.
I def. mis wrote that, I drive the carolla to bart. my fault.
The trans was fine until I had a new clutch and flywheel installed. It was after I actually drove from va to ca that it got stupid hard to shift. Not sure if it was an installation problem or a component problem. The place I bought the clutch and flywheel from wanted the old stuff back but since at the time i only had one car I couldn't take my car out of commision. Especially not long enough to pull the clutch and flywheel, send it back east and then wait for them to decide weather or not i'll get a new setup then send it back to me and have it reinstalled.
As far as driving hard, I did. Never abusive break crap hard but i def pushed the car on occasion. I never could get into 2nd gear above 6k rpms, it always had a grind but i never speed shifted or anything like that since I've owned the car. Personaly i feel that it was either the parts or installation error andthe stress from me driving it everyday finaly broke it.
I'm not trying to reason with anybody or justify my purchase.
I know it's not the best decision, nor by far not even close to the best vehicle to buy, especially right now. But I have the funds for it, the use for it and i wanted one for a while. I beat around in my carolla and have fun in my hummer.
As far as maint. cost, i get everything at cost and i do all the work myself. I have full 4 year warranty on everything except wear items (Tires, Brake pads etc..) I also now have gap insurance. So basically if anything happens to this car, it's covered. Some hippy wants to burn the it down, go for it, your taking a payment off my hands.
But anyways guys, thanks for all your help on this forum!!!

Fair enough, glad you're getting it b/c you will take it off road. I had an '81 Bronco and it was a total POS & HORRIBLE mileage but I used it bigtime, took it up nasty stuff to shorten my approaches to this region's 14k peaks. Sounds like you did make a good decision then, use the Corolla most of the time, but the H3 when you need to climb 45-degree dirt slopes.

Scary... is this your second manual car? First being S2k?
Just wondering if it was user error.

Why did you have to change the clutch/flywheel so soon?

Nope, def. not my first or even 2nd manual. Actually, i've only owned 1 automatic since i started owning cars. It's the only trans i've had that ever broke. I've had the occasional honda scratch in 3rd or 2nd but that's about it. THE TRANNY DID NOT BREAK BECAUSE OF ANYTHING HONDA DID so don't think it happens often!!! It broke due to a defective clutch that was not disengaging when the pedal was pushed in. hydraulic system was fine, dealer pulled clutch out yesterday and called me this morning. They said the pressure plate was all f'd up and there was no clutch material on the friction disc and it chewed up my flywheel and also did something to the TO bearing which was locking up and chewed up the input shaft on the trans somehow. I knew it wasn't me.
I changed the clutch and flywheel because i was about to drive across country and had a hair over 90k on the car and wanted everything to be ok for the drive. Figured i'd be replacing it shortly anyways so i minus well do it now.
Ok, gas prices....yes i know they are high...I don't drive this car everyday. I drive a carolla everyday or take bart (a train/subway type deal here in cali) to work and back.

Wow, preventative maintanance leading to catastrophic failure, that's ironic. It makes you wonder how many of the things that typicaly go wrong with a car are due to prior repair jobs being incompentantly done.

My old Integra cost me about $1,500 in repairs when a Walt's muffler shop improperly installed a muffler and made it impossible for me to pass emissions. Walt's eventualy fixed it and covered a part of the expense but leading up to that including dealer diagnosis, a tune up, a new muffler, a new sensor, etc cost about $1,500.

Maybe the clutch or fly wheel that you purchased was not the appropiate type for the TSX. . I still can't believe that tranny failed you.. . good luck with the H3...

Well I can't let that one go. The newer American cars are getting much better and some are on par with the current Japanese cars. Sorry, but the figures don't lie.

We are spoiled by Honda's bulletproof nature (Odyssey transmissions excepted). Hondas and Toyota's are in a class of their own, generally...but newer US cars are pushing hard.

That being said, Hummer's reliability is in the toilet. I'd trust a first generation Hyundai Excel before one of those beasts.
