Better acceleration than G35c?
Better acceleration than G35c?
Hi Guys,
I went from Orange County, CA to Las Vegas, NV this Thanksgiving. I heard from a friend of mine that the traffic on Friday morning was insane, so I decided to start my trip in the afternoon. Traffic had died down and there actually wasn't that many cars on the road. On the I-15 North near Baker, I came up on and passed a G35 coupe. I made a few lane changes and noticed that the G35 was following me. At this point, I was doin about 90 MPH. Anyways, I decided to gun it and the G35 was keeping up until I got stuck behind a few cars. The G35 then used the truck lane to get past a few cars and I decided to follow.
I noticed that at about 100 MPH, my TSX started to out accelerate a G35. I should probably tell you now that I have a '05 6MT (stock). After following the G35 for a while, I let him lead again. Without any traffic around, the G35 accelerated and I decided to follow. Again, at about 100 MPH I would start to gain then pass the G35. I did this about 7 times because I could not believe that a stock '05 6MT could out accelerate a V6 G35 Coupe. I believe that the G35 was an auto and also stock.
I was thinking that weight would have something to do with it, but I had my GF and one of her girlfriends in the car, and the G35 only had 1 guy in the passenger seat. Both of my passengers and I stuffed the trunk full and I can't expect that the G35 could have had more cargo. I don't think that G35 was still in it's break in point since it was the older body style and smaller stock rims.
I'm not trying to brag that our TSX is better than a G35, but does this make sense? I used to have a lot of respect for the G35 since I thought it was a great looking car with some good numbers under the hood, but after this trip I think that I've lost respect for the G35. Has anyone here driven a G35? Does anyone have any input on why a V6 just got out accelerated by a 4-cyl? I'm not much of a car guru, so any input would be nice.
Thanks!

I'd say it's more that the G35c driver didn't want to have his license revoked by getting caught speeding over 100 mph. That stretch of highway is a notorious speed trap. My friend was clocked a few years back by an airplane doing 110 mph on his way to Vegas.
Honda's have great acceleration, but when you're on a rolling start of around 80-100 mph, I wouldn't see much of a significant gain from a Honda. Especially when you're pacing a G35Coupe, I don't think he was trying at all.

hmm.. i have basically both cars, TSX & 350z (has the same engine as g35). not trying to bash TSX, but I feel the Z is much much faster and more powerful than TSX.. so there is no way TSX can outrun g35c. 100 ft/lbs torque / 100 hp different is a lot.
i think the g35c's driver wasnt even trying to push the throttle harder.

Put it this way, the other day early in the morning when I was driving to my relatives in the TSX, there was this Infiniti FX 35 or 45, not sure because it was night, but he was driving around 80mph on the highway.
I wanted to keep up in the TSX, but as I got near him, he started to speed up even more. I didn't want to go past 100mph, but when I got to about 90-95, he sped up more and in about 4 seconds was about 5-6 car lengths ahead of me. He must've been going around 110mph.
I'm tell you the Nissan/Infiniti VQ V6/V8 engines have lots of more torque and can outmuscle the Honda/Acura I4's and V6 with ease unfortunately.
So, in conclusion the G35C would smoke a TSX w/o even really trying. Heck, the old I35 which is FWD and 255hp V6 can smoke our TSX too. It's all about the driver.

I made the same trip as well...traffic wasn't bad at all. I don't think he was trying...otherwise he would have certainly stuck out like a sore thumb. Even I was limiting my speed, even though I was trying to beat another car that left 30 minutes after me but had access to the carpool lanes. Going past 100 mph is instantly considered wreckless driving

Yeah i agree with everyone that he probably wasnt trying.
When you stomp on those engines they pull, and they pull hard.
Honda's have great top end but nothing that could out muscle that much torque.

funny this happened b/c just this weekend I was hanging out with some friends with my TSX and him with his G35s. We had to go somewhere and I decided to follow him. He had a 6mt G35 loaded with 5 people, I had my auto TSX (driving in SS) with just 2 people. The TSX was spirited and accelerated quick, but it was no contest. Later, when I was sitting in his car, you could just feel the difference. When you put the pedal down, that car just moves and it does it w/o the high revs needed in the tsx.
oh but i must add, getting away from the power, interior wise i have to say hands down it goes to the tsx. I can't stand those bright orange dials in the g35. Even my friend, who completely loves his g, was impressed by the tsx interior and especially the navi.
It was like deja vu this morning when I was driving to work. It was still 630am and I see these 2 cars out of nowhere. 1 was behind me and the other to the right of me. Imagine that combination of HIDs lights behind you.
Anyways, the speed limit was 35mph and I was already driving 50mph. Well the first car overtook me and it was either an M35 or M45 and I like the LED taillights on that thing. I think the M was going 65mph. Then the 2nd car overtook me and it was an FX 35 or 45
that was going probably 60mph.
I tried to catch up to them both and I looked and I was already driving probably 57mph and they both still were 3 car lengths ahead of me. I didn't want to drive any faster because
a lot of police are around this time of morning.
The thing I wish for is if Honda could probably license their interior designs to Nissan and Nissan could license their VQ engine to Honda that would be sweet! Honda could tweak the VQ to get better gas mileage, it would be a win/win situation for both car companies.

It didnt say in the vid, but it's possible that G35 was an automatic. Also the S2 had a couple power mods. With those two things on top of each other that video starts to make more sense.
yes, pretty light but not powerful at all compared to Z/g35..
s2000 has no torque.
bigger engine gets better gains w/ only bolt on mods. VQ is V6, while s2000 is inline 4.
with the same mods, i would say, the Z will still win.

I had a 04 and a 05 G35 Sedan 6mt. The sedan 6mt is faster than the coupe but slower than the 350z. Because of weight. But the car can hit 150 extremly fast and there is no way a TSX can even touch it.
When a TSX can do 14.0-14.2 and 101-103 mph traps in the 1/4 stock then the G35 will be faster.
I had a Stillen True Dual CAtback exhaust on mine, and they do not gain that much power. They do gain about 12 hp and about the same for TQ. There is a Motordyne Plenum / Spacer that gives the car a good 18hp/tq also. That made my car dyno 255 and 244tq. Peak may not be much more over the stock one but the whole powerband increased 20+. Peak TQ went up 15.

That, and the s2k driver was pretty good. Very clean and fast shifts.
The s2k is loud as heck though. I couldn't even hear the G35 engine/exhaust.

maybe this guy redid his whole drive train backwards and was drivin in reverse going foward..lol or maybe he was going in 3rd gear..lol i dunno~ but what i kno is that..nissan cars are STRONG! lol Acuras mroe based on technology and luxury. Infinity is more based on power and luxury. so yea~

You really have to be a damn good driver on that hard to shift 6mt (not smooth) to make it faster.
And btw, I owned two G35s.
