Bad Optima Redtop 35?

Hey guys, have anyone had their redtop fail on them after 3 years? Mine hasn't fully died yet but starting the car is getting harder and harder. I am in need of a new battery now.

batteries die after about 2-3 years.

check your warranty info.

I have heard that Optima was the greatest thing of all time...guess not I'll be checking out the ones at Sears tomorrow.

all batteries die.
again, check your warranty info.

Optima is marketed towards people having lots of accessories in their vehicles. not on how long it last.

Their website states "up to 2x longer life" for yellow/red tops. It's probably why their batteries also cost up to 2x as much.

The warranty is split into whether you bought it before or after 2/1/2009... http://www.optimabatteries.com/optim...anty/index.php

You said they market to heavy utility but not longevity when they clearly market to longevity as well. I would expect their battery to last "up to 2x longer" which infers it will last longer than the average battery.

all batteries die, depending on circumstances, it can fail quicker.

that just screams marketing hype to me.

what we do agree with is the warranty.
if he falls into a free battery from Optima then all is good.
if not, then he should be looking for a new battery.

Don't waste your money on Optima. There are several on here who have had problems. Just to to Autozone and get their battery. The battery doesn't make you car go any faster, save gas, or make it look better, just get one that works. I have the Autozone and it is all you need.

I hear Interstate also makes a good battery.

I would not waste money on Optima, either, although I would expect it to last longer than 2 or 3 years. About 4 years is normal for most batteries, I believe. I got over 4 years out of my OEM battery.

My yellow top died in a little over a year. Never buying their over priced batteries anymore.

Running a stinger battery at the moment. Two years and still kicking strong.

I agree. There are numerous replacement batteries available for a reasonable cost (I went with a Delco; I'm sure Autozone would also be a good choice)(though around $20 more). Any good replacement battery should last a minimum of 4-5 years (I replaced my OE battery at around 3 1/2 years because it had a dead cell, though I never had any kind of a problem with it). The whole battery thing seems to be somewhat of an issue here because of reports of poor OE battery life and (ironically), there are so many reports of replacement Optima batteries that have performed poorly (red and yellow). I'd offer that I'm quite sure you'd find that the streets are literally full of 5-8 year old cars still humming along on their OE batteries (many on borrowed time I'd guess). That said, I'd also guess that like 99.5% of car owners don't give the battery a second thought until it doesn't work anymore. It's not really considered a serviceable item (with a scheduled replacement interval I mean). So..... I'd say pass on the big money Optima's and just buy a decent replacement battery.

You guys are right. At first I thought it might have been a normal thing due to the earlier replies. I told my friend about it this morning and he told me he has never had to changed the battery on his car (5+ years). Definitely won't go Optima anymore. I saw autozone had some Duralast. Does anyone recommend?

I just put in a Duralast Gold this past weekend. It's $95 and comes with 8 years warranty. Can't say much about it since it's just a few days old. I think I over paid since Costco sells its Kirkland battery for $57 with 7 years warranty and both brands are manufactured by the same company.

Ya, not to throw salt in the wound, but Kirkland batteries have been consistently rated tops by Consumer Reports. There isn't a Costco near me (and don't you have to pay to join like BJ's?), so I went with a different battery (Delco 60). My online research showed this to be a good battery and it was relatively cheap (around $70 including tax).

I literally just bought a Duralast Gold today. I believe my car has been using the OEM battery and it's just not cranking well in the mornings (where it's been about 30*F last two days). I figure $90 after core-refund is worthwhile for the next five or so years on a solid battery.

I got a call back from Acura Clients Services today. The lady said my battery has a 4 year warranty. Since my battery died on a Sunday and no dealerships were open, she can approve me for buying an Autozone battery and will issue me a full refund.

warranty

all acura vehicles purchased after 2006...
come with a 4 year full replacement warranty...
no mileage restrictions whatsoever..

so if you bought your vehicle on or after 11/4/06 (take notice date written)
it would still be under warranty... 100% parts and labor.

batteries bought from an acura dealer (around 100.00) come with an 8 year 4month warranty..
and typically last 2 years ..

its in the owners manual..

Advance Auto Parts usually run promos of $10 off $50 and $20 off $100. Try to Google and see if you can find a coupon.

When I went to pick up my 07 TSX w/ NAVI CPO from the dealer, the battery was weak as the car was starting very slowly. Therefore, they replaced the battery with a new one prior to giving me the car.

Not sure how long this new battery (OEM) will last me for.

Any suggestions?

I went back to my OEM battery, which I've placed in storage for 3 years with no charge. Charged it up overnight and it cranks up like a king.

About? You have a new battery so you should be all set for...... until you need a new one I guess. There have been reports here of poor performance from some OE batteries, but I'd guess the vast majority have been as good as most any other OE batteries (including the ones in my 05 and my wife's 07). I suggest you enjoy your new car and not worry about the battery.
