Amsoil
Hi guys, a auto repair shop close to my house charged about $61 for Amsoil; my local dealer charged me about $75 bucks for Mobile 1 full synthetic. Should I skip the dealer and go to the repair shop to get it done? Will my engine mess up if i switch from M1 to Amsoil?

I've never heard of Amsoil but what I've been told is once you start using sythetic stay with it for the duration of the car. I run mobil 1 fully synthetic in mine and love it.

amsoil is very good but mobil 1 is very good also and is what i recently switched over to on my last oil change. do NOT pay $75 to the dealership. instead, for your next oil change, go to wal-mart and buy a 5qt jug of mobil 1 for $22. they should be on special still. and next time you go to the dealership, bring your oil from walmart that way it will be alot cheaper. also, i dont know if you know anything about filters, but i would suggest an aftermarket filter too, either the amsoil filter or mobil 1 filter (depending on which oil you go with). its better than the dealership one. tell them to use your supplies you provide. that way all you have to pay is the labor rate for the oil change.

WHy is it overkill? you can run synthetics for much longer and get better protection than conventional for just a little more $$
walmart 5 quart jugs of synthetic runs from 20-26 bucks!
some oil can actually make a difference. I had mobil 1 synthetic in my tsx and it ran rougher than with conventional. I use castrol syntec and valvoline synpower and the car runs real smooth. i will never run mobil 1 ever again.
Amsoil is one of the BEST SYNTHETICS you can get. ANd you can switch back and fourth from synthetic and conventional.
Mobil 1 isnt fully synthetic btw.

You can switch between conventional and synthetic oils all you want. It own't do anything to your vehicle.
It's 100% true that you don't need synthetic oil in our cars. It's also true that you don't need a reflash, intake, header, exhaust, wheels/tires, coilovers, pulley kits, or any of the other billion and 5 upgrades that are avilable. Synthetic oils have advantages over conventional oils, most notably in the change interval. If the oil costs you 10% more and lasts twice as long, you saved some money. Synthetics last longer and generally reduce engine wear and can be more tailored to your choice of driving style and other needs.

If you have an 06 or newer, you have the ever-present OIL LIFE monitor which does not know the difference between synthetic and nonsynthetic. I challenge you to do an oil analysis between synthetic and nonsynthetic - use Blackstone - by running the same number of miles and similar driving conditions, say 6k miles. I'll bet my hat and saddle the results will be very similar.

The OIL LIFE monitor doesn't even know if you have oil or not. It counts things like cold-starts, v-tec enguagement, etc. It will work exactly the same if you put shampoo in your car (which I hear does wonderfully on the wear tests). It knows absolutely nothing about your oil, and if you actually change your oil when the OIL LIFE monitor tells you to, there won't be any significant difference between synthetics and conventional oils. Change your oil at 10,000 instead of the 3,500ish miles the OIL LIFE monitor suggests and you'll see a difference in your trusted Blackstone UOA.
Does anyone have a Blackstone UOA report of a conventional oil at 7,500 miles they'd be willing to share with us? I only have 7,500 synthetic UOA's that I can post. Even though it would be 2 different engines, I think it at least gives us a place to start.
