Assume level ground and not accelerating from a standstill.
In other words, you're in traffic, or you slowed down from 15-20 mph, usually 2nd gear.
In my previous threads, it seems like a lot of people are in 2nd gear at 6-8 mph, which to my ears is lugging the engine.
This is an in between-er for me which I absolutely hate.
Sometimes I'll lightly press the pedal in 2nd.
Other times, I'll double clutch down to 1st.

If I'm VERY light on the throttle, I don't feel like the engine is lugging in 2nd as long as it's above 1k rpm. Don't remember what speed this corresponds to.

sometimes i am in first, other times im in second...very grey area for me. i also hear the engine lugging so sometimes i take it out of gear completely and if i have slowed down it goes into first, if i have sped up (downhill) ill put it in second.

Let me help you!
I used to go down to first...now I usually don't bother and just go into 2nd. It means having to play with the clutch a bit and ride it slightly, but then I don't have to quickly upshift in case the traffic picks up quicker than I had expected.

On a side note, it'd be cool if you flip a switch and get a slipper clutch for just such situations (slipper clutch = no engine braking).

The chronic bucking syndrome is not (at least not for me) from shifting down to first, it's while I'm in first and rolling at a relatively constant speed, or constant speed up/slow down while in crawling traffic. The DBW jerks the car when you let off the gas, and jerks the car again when you press the gas.
