2004 NY Auto Show

Anyone gettin' amped for this one yet? Bunch of production introductions, plus the unveiling of the new RL... bound to be fun.

Any NY members going? Snap-shooters?

Junkster, who LOVES auto shows... probably too much.

I talked with my dealer the other day, and he said that the Detriot Auto Show was a "Honda" show - where they show off new Honda's, and the NY auto show is an "Acura" show, which is why we should see nothing but new Acura's. We'll see the RL, and I hope we'll get to see the TSX A-Spec (non-concept), and maybe one or two future Acura concept cars...

Everytime I see JaTe's pic of his car, I freak out thinking "Ahhh, that guy lost his bumper!" Than I remember that he was modding and breathe a sigh of relief.

Wow, lots of peeps attending, I expect good pics!!! Since I can't go, I have to get good pics from you guys.

Junkster, who does go to the Denver Auto Show every year.

yes, as some might know, i am looking forward very much to seeing the NYC Auto show pictures, since I do live in Chicago. I absolutly cannot wait for this thing. Acura has showed promise of a new RL, NSX, RDX, luxury convertable, and the TSX A-spec. Infiniti has to make up for the new TL which is simply selling incredibly to say the least. Lexus might unveil officially its "GT" engines (the AMG and M competators). Only German companies with things to say are going to be Audi and maybe VW. It's gonna be fun.

I won't be there the first few days, but I will go. Can you believe in just a little over a week and we get to see the new RL! I hope it isn't like the TL concept, I really want to see what Acura has done to the interior and if they finally have caught on to sporty/luxo combo. I'm hoping to see fine authentic wood mixed with metal accents (aluminum & polished chrome).

Bump, since the show has opened up and given us picks...

I've already got the ugliest redesign and ugliest rebadging cars.

Ugliest redesign: 2005 Grand Cherokee
I've seen three pics of this thing, and it just seems to have lost all its charsima. Back when they came out with the first Grand Cherokee, it looked nothing like it's boxy competitors, looked athletic, sporty and handsome. They curved it up a bit for the previous generation and it didn't look bad, it was just badly built. But now, it looks like any other SUV on the road.

Ugliest rebadge: 2005 Saab 9-7x
Now GM has totally destroyed the Saab brand in it's entirety. First, they create the Saabaru. Now, they give us this monstrosity. A Trailblazer + Saab = Saablazer? I'm not clever enough to come up with a mocking name for this one. And if you look at the interior, there is nothing of the Saab element, except for a really misplaced look of the quarter circle center air duct, which looks so out of place with none of the other Saab elements around. Someone please go beat down Bob Lutz.

I'm coming up with more awards as I scan through the show.

Junkster, who loved the "Wayne Brady Show" on Comedy Central last night... I'm Wayne Brady, Bitch!

I have absolutely nothing to add about the NY Auto Show, but I have to say that the Wayne Brady sketch last night on the Chappelle show was one of the funniest things ever!

Shoot, I'm gonna have to go bump the Chappelle Show thread on the Misc forum...

The show had so many cameos... Big Boi, Nick Cannon, Wayne Brady... That whole Training Day sequence was pretty funny as well.

Went to Preview Last Nite

Hi - I was able to attend a limited preview of the NY Show last nite. I am also in the market for a TSX (Currently driving a 93 Civic EX coupe that I love but its time to move on) and I was able to sit in the new RL and was up close to the Honda concept truck. Although I am not as well versed as some members here are some thoughts on the Acura stuff and some other production cars in general:

The RL is a very nice care. It didnt really remind me as much of the Camry as mentioned on another thread -- although the pics make a good case for the similarities. I thought the cockpit was great but I didnt like the center stalk with the "I Drive" type button. I think its a great car and a huge upgrade from the current staid version.

They had a Aspec TL, straight TL and 6mt CG quartz TSX there. Carbon grey has to be the most popular color in the entire show. Nearly every make has their cars in a similar shade.

I was impressed with the new S40 and would think about it as a replacement for the trusty Civic but I have QC/reliability issues with Volvo let alone a first year model.

The new Corvette is cool but I have always loved Vettes.

If anyone has any questions I will be glad to help out. I am going shopping for the TSX tonite. I cant find CG/quartz but may go with ssm/ebony. Thanks to all for answering my prior posts...

I'm assuming the rest of us won't be allowed to sit inside the RL concept. What did you think of the rear air vents? They look so odd to me. How did the seats feel? Just how big is it - Accord sized, Avalon sized?

The rear air vents are a bit funky but I thought they were pretty neat. I really dont know if that will be in the production though.

It is bigger than a Accord for sure. What struck me the most was how wide the car seemed. The length probably is comparable to an Avalon though. The seats were one of the best things in the car. They just hug you. Of all the cars I sat in last nite, the RL had the best overall cockpit for a car in its class and/or price range in terms of comfort. Changing the locale of the Navi system to me doesnt make sense though and like I mentioned before the "I Drive" inspired button is not something I would like but I guess that is the wave of the future....

It's rather sad that a majority of folks don't like the Idrive concept (big a$$ round knob somewhere in the middle of the center stack playing the role of an input device) yet every manufacturer is doing it (except Lexus GS). It's even sadder that the folks who came up with the name for it (BMW) will be stuck with that image for a long time.

The new Acura RL is sick. It comes stock with 20 inch rims! The exterior is really nice, except for the back, I really don't like the shape of it. To bad I couldn't post the pics of it, but you can still see them. Go to www.Acura.com and click on "prototype RL" watch the scret unfold icon. It's in Flash format so it wont let you save any pics.
