2004 Lemon List

Not sure if this has been posted or not, but here goes:

********************************
The 2004 Lemon List

Thanks to the efforts of the Center for Auto Safety, we are able to provide you with the vehicle complaints on file with the National Highway for Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Each year, thousands of Americans call their government to register complaints about their vehicles. The federal government collects this information but has never released it to the general public. The complaint index is based on a ratio of the number of complaints for each vehicle to the sales of that vehicle.

MODEL COMPLAINT INDEX RATIO
Subaru Impreza 27,952
Infiniti I35 21,372
Audi A4 18,943
Ford Escape 14,441
Ford Focus 13,346
Acura RSX 11,657
Pontiac Aztek 11,537
Ford Excursion 10,277
Mitsubishi Eclipse 9,691
Jeep Liberty 9,450
Chevrolet Corvette 9,214
Chevrolet Blazer 7,938
Suzuki Grand Vitara 7,385
Volkswagen Passat 6,687
Honda Insight 6,496
Volkswagen Jetta 6,152
Acura TL 6,058
Suzuki Vitara 5,913
Land Rover Freelander 5,589
Audi A6 5,571
Dodge Caravan 5,561
Jeep Grand Cherokee 5,235
Honda S2000 5,162
GMC Yukon 5,094
Dodge Neon 5,045

I'm surprised to see the I35 on the list, especially that high.

Does lack of power figure into the complaints?

I'm really surprised to see the RSX that high, but not shocked with the Audis.

me too! also why S2000 was on the list but not 7 Series, ML Class, C Class???

I wonder what those complain for? dun like it? not their expectation? not fast enough? not big enough? If it is pure complain on something goes wrong then there should be no Honda there.

If it is a ratio of complaints compared to sales wouldn't a BIGGER number be better, as in one complaint to the goverment per a numer of cars sold. On the other hand if it is the other way then it would say there are over 27000 complaints per Imprezza sold...???? The source link might help.

a year or so ago i posted a similar article/stats and the s2k was on there too...from what i remember that list was to measure how many complaints/attempts were made to lemon law a car.

and to put aside the quality aspects of the cars in question, Benz/BMW customer service would've soothed any customer malcontent b4 the complaint made it to the NTHSA while honda/acura service is just lets put it nicely "underwhelming"

Sorry guys, I have to agree with gilbo on this one. Notice that Lexus isn't on there, either. This list tallies complaints, not the actual quality problems.

"Center for Auto Safety"?

Isn't that Nader's old "consumer interest" organization? http://www.autosafety.org/

If you visit the NHTSA complaints site, http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...aintsearch.cfm you can you can look up the actual number of complaints filed.

For the 2003 Subaru Impreza, which they claim is the biggest lemon around, the number of complaints is 21 (twenty-one).

For the 2003 Toyota Corolla, which should be the closest thing to mechanical nirvana to be found on the planet the number of complaints filed is 171. (That's ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-ONE!!!) .

(The '03 RSX had all of 5 (FIVE) complaints and for gilbo's illumination, the BMW 325i had 26 complaints filed.)

Something does NOT make sense here! Maybe they sell more Corollas than Imprezas but it's NOT 10-1!

The federal government collects this information but has never released it to the general public." No, it's posted and it's pubic information. You have to actually go to the DOT website and look at it.

"The complaint index is based on a ratio of the number of complaints for each vehicle to the sales of that vehicle." How sure are they of the sales figures???? It took me about an hour to find out exactly how many Camrys were sold in 2003.

Methinks whatever community-service law student was assigned the project shoulda taken Arithmetic instead of Torts!

Lexus & MB services will lick their customer ass but sure not bmw! bmw never know what is customer services. They all have same answer for every complains: "It is normal! nothing wrong, you are driving a bmw not a civic"
