100% local driving and MPG

Hello all~

School had started, and for me, i need to drive 8 miles back and forth between my house and college........and also, there's no highway i can go to instead.....so basically it's all local driving for me.

and also i installed my K&N Typhoon CAI last month(this CAI is great btw), but i do notice a drop in my mpg.

with the 100% local driving i had, and with the CAI installed, now i am only getting mpg that's in the high 14s and low 15s.............display reading 15.1mpg right now.

so for those of you, who drove in the local area only (or nearly all), what's your MPG?? (put a note if you had stock intake or some other modification on your car)

Thanks~

My car is stock ('04 5AT) and I drive all local roads and get ~26 mpg. The last 2 tanks I've calculated came out to 26.4 and 26.7.

PWPTSX: Do you get stuck in a LOT of stop-n-go traffic? Those are very, very low numbers.

Only other thing I can think of, non-car-related, is your driving style being very aggressive (jackrabbit starts and stops).

I used to drive 15 miles each way, every day, in nearly bumper-to-bumper, stop-n-go traffic, and still got 21-24mpg. Edit: With a CAI installed, and fairly agressive driving.

If you're only going 8 miles back and forth from your house to school, and you're getting 15mpg, you're still only going to have to fill up after 30 trips.

15mpg is pretty low, but understandable if you drive semi-aggressively. You should be able to get 20mpg if you go a little easier on the go pedal.

I drive a lot of local driving nowadays because I no longer use my car to commute on a daily basis and my mileage hasn't really suffered much. In fact, I am easily averaging 21-22 mpg with mildly aggressive driving.

my drivng style is pretty gentle, not too agressive......and also, the traffic move in a pretty smooth way, no traffic jams, there are a few traffic light, but i don't think it affect the mpg THAT much..... (and i try to be more gently on the pedal right now, but still got the same result.........)

and btw i use Octane 91 gas............car had around 5K miles.

any other reason you guys can think of???

OP said his "display" showed 15.1mpg. He's got an 06.

That seems too low. Are the tires properly inflated? Does the car pull to one side? (i.e. alignment). No engine lights on?(bad O2 sensor?) What brand gas do you use?

that's pretty impressive. i do about 40/60 city/highway and i only get 22.5 mpg. i'm semi-aggressive. on the freeways, i'm always cruising at 80 mph. i'm trying to at least break the 25 mpg mark. i try not to use AC as much and only put in 91 shell or chevron. maybe i need to take a long trip and cruise only at 65 mph... i have a stock 2005 TSX.

My driving style is not constant, sometimes really aggressive and sometimes really slow. I just burn half the tank (25.5L), and ran for 208km. I did some math myself, which is 12.2L/100km or 19mpg. Is this number too low?

I'm not sure if my following mods will lower my Fuel Mileage, but definity I feel a drop of Fuel Mileage after the pullies installed.

EngineMod:
DC Sport Header
Injen CAI
High-Flow Cat
Pullies

My mpg for all city driving has always been bad since I got the car. Even if driving super conservately I would average 17mpg at best. I'm amazed how some people post 20+mpg from all city driving. Do you guys live in super large cities with no traffic? However, when driving on the highway, i get 30+mpg.

How much time does it take you to get to class? If you watch your MID, the gas mileage drops while the car is idling for any extend period of time. If it takes too much time to get to class (20-30 minutes for 8 miles) or you sit in your car too long at stop lights (or too many stop lights) that will kill the MPGs.

If you are not taking too long, maybe the car is not reaching normal operating temp long enough to run efficiently as possible. You might be getting 10 MPG the 1st 2 miles, and 20 MPG the last 2 miles for an average of 15 MPGs. I’ll bet if you took the car on a short road trip, the MPGs would be in the +30 range.

06 TSX (all stock) 2,000 miles
19-20MPG so far according to the readout -- pure city driving (school and back)

I envy you guys who are getting around 23-24 in the city. I try to keep my RPMs consistantly low, but even with that, I can't hi 23-24MPG in the city Any tips?

PS. Heck maybe its the semi hilly area I live in.

With all local driving to work everday I get around 18-19. That's before I installed a K&N filter, stock intake. My drive to work is about 5 miles mostly going up hills from standing starts. If I drive around town on the weekends on more level roads (all local again), I seem to get around 25ish.

This is all according to the trip computer also.

You know how your grandfather told you about walking to school uphill both ways? My drive to work actually seems to be uphill both ways because of where they placed the lights and stop signs. I guess gramps wasn't so full of it after all...

How did the K&N air filter affect your MPG after you put it in?

yes i know how to calculate mpg, the different between calculated and the one that the computer shown shouldn't be more than +/- 2 at the most. so evn my MID is off by -2, i still only get like 17........that's a bad mpg compare to 22ish.

i checked the tire pressure, no the car doesn't pull to one side, everything is fine on the car. gas brand SUNOCO

i went to the same exact gas station everytime, (but different pump, i guess that doesn't matter right?) so you think it's the gas station's problem? like if they cheated by putting like 89 in 91 or something?

Not sure yet. I did it last weekend and have a 200 miles road trip on this tank of gas. I didn't notice any difference on the road trip though. 35mpg

When I drove back and forth between work (~1.5 miles each way) and just looked at that, I got about 16 MPG, so yours matches up with mine.

Highway I still get ~31 MPG

i travel about 90% local roads in NOVA. The only engine mod i have is a typhoon CAI. I usually get about 17-18 MPG. This is on a 12 mile route that takes approximately 30 min twice a day during the week. Pretty shitty if you ask me, wish it was better.

try filling up at a different gas station...it may sound far fetched, but I have noticed I get at least 3-4mpg less with my rsx when I fill up at BP versus filling up at Hess, Raceway, or Wawa...This has happened after 3 fillups consistently.

15 is insanely low. Are your RPMs regualrly in the 3s and 4s? I try to shift (the shifttronic) at 1500 and still only get around 20-21, so if your racing it at all, i guess that can happen, though i'd still take it in to get it checked out.

For what its worth, I normally shift at 3500-4000 for the first 2 or 3 gears... and still get the mileage stated earlier.

PWPTSX (OP), Do you sit in the car with it running with AC (eg talking on the cell, listening to the stereo)? I've sat in my car in traffic (stopped on hwy-typical in the BA) and watched the MID display's AVG MILEAGE drop every minute by about 0.1 mile. Just consider that factor in how the car determines mileage.

Those are some low MPG. Try using a different brand of gas and see if the MPG increases. I've noticed that Sunoco, compared to BP, Exxon, etc., give 1-2 miles less to the gallon.

yeah maybe i need to try some other brand of gas.....

IAMHOMIN: do you really notice a 1-2 mpg dropped if you use Sunoco compare to other companies??

As i said above, I noticed a difference like that when I filled up at BP...what do you have to lose by trying a different brand?

I jot down my MPG at each fill up, and yes I've noticed that Sunoco generally gives less MPG.

I wasn't clear enough above. I meant do you sit in the car while it is idling (not moving) with the AC on?

Anything less than 20mpg is absolutely horrible and not within TSX's normal low range. Either the modification is very harsh on the gas-milage or there's something wrong with the car. I can't imagine anyone driving so bad that they would get less than 20mpg on more than one occasion.

Yes you can burn a lot of gas if you have a heavy foot, but a TSX will still average above 20mpg(11.5 litres/100KM) in city even if you change gears at 4000-5000rpm constantly.

my commute to work is pure city driving with tons of stop lights, but my MID still shows anywhere between 8.00 to 9.00 litres/100KM which translates to 26-29mpg, and my driving is not exactly grandma-style.

I have managed to get a very crappy milage on one of my tanks and that was 10.5 litres/100KM (23mpg).

btw, I have only used Sunnoco's Ultra-94(94 Octane) gas which is supposed to give me the worst gas-milage among all premium brands.

It usually takes a car 2-4 miles or 5-8 minutes of driving to fully warm up. Your temp gauge may read normal after 1 minute (engine coolant temp in the block reading) but the rest of the car is still not heated up to run at peak efficiency (engine block, trans, lube/cooling fluids, bearings, tires, exhaust/cat system). Try resetting your MID before starting out with a cold motor, there is a good chance the 1st mpg reading will be about 9-11 mpg at it will go up from there.

Other than extremely dusty/sandy conditions, stop/go traffic under 10 miles is usually consider harsh driving conditions for most cars and require the highest maint intervals. Your car’s engine would be in far better shape 100K down the road after 8 miles on the hwy every day compared to 8 miles in stop/go traffic. I would be surprise if any TSX would get more that 15-18 mpgs driving the exact same route in stop/go traffic.

How often do you get to 5th and stay there your 20min commute? The longer you are in overdrive the better the mileage. If you only make it to 3rd or 4th gear before a stop light, this will also kill your mileage. Having the 5AT SS mode and shifting to 5th faster might get you a few more mpgs with the taller gearing.
