06 TSX vs 06 G35
06 TSX vs 06 G35
Alright, so I bought my 06 TSX in June of 08.. got a great deal and I love the car:

I'm addicted to checking out cars online, and ran across a screamin' deal on an 06 G35:

I was looking at TLs, G35s and FX35s when I found the TSX (which wasn't even an option since I was going from a 95 Accord and they are similar in size, etc), drove it, and fell in love. I never actually drove a G35, but did test a couple of FXs that were priced too high IMO. The TL always seemed a like a Passat to me... a stretched out version of a smaller, well appointed car (No offense, it's still a great car!).
My questions are; does anyone own a G35? If so, would you recommend it to replace a TSX? How are the finishes? Reliability? Service costs? Anything 'stand out' that I should be aware/warned of? In your opinion, for RWD and 90+ hp, is it worth going to the Nissan family? I've always been a Honda man, but that 3.5 is hard to resist!
Thanks for your opinions and thoughts... no burns, please!

howdy.
I own an 08 TSX, auto, navi
I also own an 08 G35s, auto, navi, premium, tech, sport
there is a fairly big difference between the 06 G35 and the 08 G35.
there is basically no difference between the 06 TSX and the 08 TSX.
in 07 Infiniti put a new interior in, changed the body style, added blah blah, etc.
so basically I know nothing about the 06 G35 is my point.
but I can tell you lots about the 08 G35s sedan.
to compare it to the TSX really isn't fair to the TSX. now don't get me wrong,
I love my TSX, it's the car I drive that I won't let the wife touch, that I most enjoy
modding and looking at... but the G35s is pretty much superior in every aspect.
mind you, my G is also heavily modified, as well as the TSX.
so I've forgotten what both are like in their stock form.
the G has far more features and cool tech stuff. the power my G has makes
the TSX feel like a toy in comparison. I don't even need the power the G is
putting out right now. the interior of the G if far better appointed with many
more cool features that are practical and nice to have. the G is also a bigger
car, not by a ton, but certainly by a noticable amount. the trunk on the TSX
is bigger though, and the seats fold down, only a little hole opens in the G seat.
Given to choose one or the other, I would choose the G if I wasn't already addicted
to the TSX. My G did end up costing me about $8k more then the TSX did, so like I said
it's an unfair comparison. I bought both new at $32k (12/07 TSX) and $40k (5/08 G35s).
as far as the dealer maintenance and such goes, well Infiniti fails there.
oil changes at Acura (I provide the oil, use their filter) run me $21 each.
oil changes at Infiniti (I provide the oil, use their filter) run me $40 each.
same owner owns both dealerships, neither service manager has an answer
for why there is such a price difference. as far as longer term stuff goes,
I have no idea, both are still under 10k miles right now.
gas mileage factors in for sure.
on the same roads, the TSX gets me 27 mpg and the G35s gets only 22 mpg.
the power does make it feel worth it though.
who knows... maybe gas will go back up to $4 per gallon?
the finishes on the G are fairly nice. much better than the TSX. mind you, I have
the full sport package, which gives different seats, different steering wheel, paddle
shifters, aluminum pedals and such. so that helps the overall look. the navi is
far superior, so is the stereo system, especially at higher volumes. the seats are
leagues above the TSX's seats and the overal quality is a couple steps up.
no problem with either yet really. the TSX's fit and finish is not as nice. on the TSX,
on the passanger side, the driver's door sits a couple mm's or so above the rear door
and the line is off a tad. the service department refuses to try to align it perfectly.
plus I had a squeaking driver's seat (that was fixed). I've had no problems at all on
anything on the G. one thing poor on the G though is the seal for the moonroof. it
fails to work properly under some high pressure touchless car washes. the service dept
told me to just bring it to the dealer for a free wash any time and to aviod the touchless
washes always. one other thing is the climate control/a/c system is superior in the TSX.
it's kind of a pain in the G, it's not as exact, doesn't kick in as quick, and is not as user
friendly. the leather overall in the G is much nicer too, many people, me included bitch
about the leather in the TSX.

so in the end of this, none of this may really matter to you.
you're probably speaking of a coupe, with a completely different interior,
design, and overall feel. but maybe there's something in there you
can find useful...

My buddys roommate picked up an 04 G35 Coupe, next time I see him I'll make a direct comparison for ya to my 04 TSX. If it helps, I do remember riding in an 03 G35 Sedan a few years back and remembered how cheap it felt compared to my 99TL. It felt cheaper then a same year Maxima. Considering how much nicer The 2nd Gens TL's interior was (in my opinion) then the 2003 G35, and the leap in quality I experienced when I moved from the 99TL to my 04 TSX, I'd say the TSX would win out. But Ive heard Nissan really redid the interior in the newer G35's so the point may be moot.
Check the Pics of the interior over at Edmunds and see what you think

2007 G35: http://www.edmunds.com/used/2007/inf.../options.html#
Wow, looks like the interior didn't start looking good until 2007, the older ones look kinda cheesy. But that is a matter of opinion. I love the interior of my 04 TSX, and the 2006 TSX looks even better. If your going by interior quality, the 2006 TSX would be much better then the 2006 G35. But from the looks of it Nissan picked up the interior quality by 2007.

I wouldnt say that G35 is THAT much faster than TSX. In fact, its interior is worse and sound is annoying. 335i totally kills it. Really, G35 isnt such a big step ahead if u drive a manual TSX now. However, G35 has RWD so thats an advantage

, I would say the extra 80hp and 110lbs/tq has something to do with it. Do you realize how big 2 seconds is in the 1/4mile? That's probably anywhere from 15-20 car lengths ahead, yup no difference haha. I'm willing to bet you've never even sat in a G35 coupe let alone drove one. It will destroy a tsx in any performance test, as it should, both cars were built with different goals in mind.

No, it's not only because it's RWD

okay, so you can shut up about the BMW already.
nobody cares anyway what you have to say about it.
I don't know anything about an 06. Had a chance to drive an 04 once and have been in a couple of 04s through various friends and coworkers. The power was there, but my TSX reacted quicker to inputs, IMO (my TSX isn't stock). The TSX is no way near how fast a G35 is, however.
I thought the interior was pretty bad though. A little gimmicky with the orange lighting scheme, and my impression of the materials and finish was that...well, the strong point of the car was the engine.
IMO, I'd rather be in a TSX for my daily commute, but my priorities are different.

Wow... sounds like I should just nut up and drive the thing to see if I like it (which is what I figured in the first place). Driving the FX35, I noticed a couple of cut corners with the interior, which I can only assume made it into the G35 as well... they are actually very comparable from what I've seen/heard and read about. I would in no way call it cheap or anything, just not BMW, Audi or MB quality which I don't expect anyway. I don't think interior quality and engine/drivetrain performance are worth the costs associated with owning European... maybe in a few years when I'm ballin' and own enough cars to forget about the Euros that are in the shop all the time!
MMsTSX you are AWESOME! I've got to read through that a few more times to soak everything up. Thank you for taking the time to be so thorough.. it helps a ton! BTW I am looking at a sedan, as the coupe is just too impractical right now. TypeRC thank you too! I appreciate all the info! I too can kinda tell from any photos that the change between 03-06 and 07+ at least LOOKS like a leap in the direction of higher quality. Valeratj I think the 335i point is moot because there is no way I could or would afford that car right now.. and I believe 90 hp and the added torque of the G could easily blow our TSXs out of the water, RWD or not. And, I love the exhaust note on the G/FX... they growl!
Thank you all for your input, advice, and facts! If anyone hears of anything really negative about the G, let me know (I've been digging and couldn't find much)!

I think my opinion might help a bit. I have recently test drove a 05 and 06 and 07 G35 coupe and 07 and 08 TSX. As far as power the g35 had it all the way there's no doubt about that. But the interior I would give it the TSX if going its up against any of the g35 before 07. As 07 is when Nissan step up there game.
As for gas mpg if that matters to you at all, but from both my friends who do about 85% if not more city driving. My friend with an 05 g35 sedan was getting 17mpg in the city driving like an old women. My other friend who drives nuts who and has an 08 TSX was stilling getting 21-22mpg in the city. But like another one of my friends mention to me the G35 is a sports car and gets sports car mpg.
Maintenance I think MMsTSX showed a good point with the oil changes at both dealerships. You can also go onto edmunds.com and check out what maintenance cost on the car here http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/select.html . I would say its pretty correct if not under estimates a bit, as it did for my Bmw.
Problems with the others Pre 07 when I looked on the G35driver.com many people complained about their Gs for negative camber problems in the front, Oil burning, the sunroof when washing their cars. Also when it rained on the coupes water would fall inside when you open the door not sure about the sedan.
As for me even with all these problems I still love the G35 as its a great car for power and price there going pretty cheap now. But I'm picking up a TSX instead, because mpg( I drive 90% city) the inside is nicer, and maintenance. Only way I would pick the g35 coupe up is if it was an 07+, but the price difference I'm seeing between the 06 and 07 are about 5k. Also for me being a college student I don't wanna be paying more like I was on my bmw.
*I apologize for all spelling and grammar problems here I'm on 3 hours of sleep right now*

Hey, I am just saying what I think. Good point about BMW's price and reliability. Early models didnt have oil coolers and that turned out to be a problem. As I said G might have seemed relatively slow simply because I drove a faster car just before I drove G35. I also pointed out the finish of the interior being worse than in TSX. The only thing that I like about G35's interior is orange illumination.
MMsTSX u maybe so helpful sometimes, but other times u just annoy people with your thuggish behavior and brag about mods which u dont show us (cuz u dont have any?) in 08 TSX which is not even capable of having either Hondata's reflash or K-PRO.

Which year G35 did you drive? Auto or 6 speed?
Regardless, the speed difference between a 335 and G35 and much less than a G35 compared to a TSX.
This must be a joke
I don't see how people on here think it is comparable only thing they have in common is they are both "mid-size sedans" (I'm talking about the 4dr G) I've ridden both, and got rides in both, obviously you see my name on here is AATSX so i am a big fan of the TSX and not a hater so don't call me one.
The G35 had most powerful v6 engine, 306 horsepower and TSX is a 4 cylinder with 204 horsepower.
2.4 vs. 3.5 ? so of course acceleration is much more greater in the Infiniti it suspension is even more stiffer if you take sports package letting you go 100 km/h on MAX 30-km/h on ramps and you wont even feel it.
The Infiniti is a good 10 thousand dollars more expensive than the Acura.
As for exterior the both look nice but the engine bay is much bigger on the G35 for obvious reasons. So the body on the G35 looks more intimidating and aggressive and BIGGER.
Interior wise, the TSX is nice but the Infiniti wont just be nice for the price tag its very beautiful and has every feature you can think off. Technology wise they are pretty much same i can't say the Infiniti is alot more advanced but it is very luxurious and sporty at the same time.
Anyways this could go on forever it 2 different cars and 2 different levels apples and oranges its really not comparable if you can afford the gas and maintenance obviously you want the best you can get so get the G35 if you cant stay with TSX. Good luck man.

INFINITI g37S coupe FTW IMO --i recently traded in my 07cgptsx for a g37s and i really dont want to look back. As stated above by MMstsx the Infiniti really has it all. Horsepower, Navigation is way better, Technology and features (these are always cool so show off to your buddies) styling and overall quality. I can't comment on maintenance as far as oil changes ETC because i take care of all those things at home in my garage. So if i were you i would spend the extra dough and man up and get the infiniti. the car has so much more to offer in the aftermarket department as well. Yes there is alot of STUFF out for the tsx. But as far as performance aftermarket parts there is alot more companies out there.
I agree with what is overall said here. The G35 takes it as far as power goes and considering the fact that most ppl who go for power usually sacrifice other things that some who don't care about power wouldn't. For instance, some ppl like harsher rides to feel the road better while some like it quiet and they don't feel a thing. I agree that these two cars are totally diff from one another. Overall, I was torn between the two as well but once i drove em and compared them the TSX won it overall for my needs. I don't race nor am I a complete mod head so I wasn't sweating that overall, it's a DD for me. If I had the money I would def had gone to the G37S...that thing is official. If you're thinkin of anything other than a G37S I would either save the money and get a TSX or save more and go for the G37S. The differences btwn the 35 and 37 are ridiculous. I have driven all three, my boy has an 05 G35 and likes riding in my car more than his but I am not sure of any real diff's for btwn the 05 and 06 G35. I would either go TSX or just save for the G37S. I think your best bet would be to drive all three the same day and just compare, leave the G37 for last ;-)
On the topic of this thread...06 v 06 I woudl choose the TSX. The G35 steering is awesome and I love the RWD. The transmission isn't as good as acuras and its not as much fun to drive and the interior on the 06's is pretty
they rattle quite a bit after 40 or 50k miles.
08v08 I'd take the G35 if i wan'st worried about teh large price difference.
I've got extensive time with both, both will be reliable.
