Vigor driver's side steering rack tie rod boot.

Another part (among many) that is no longer available at the dealership, Napa, and chain and independent auto parts places is the driver's side steering rack tie rod boot. Also known as a bellows. I thought I had lucked out in finding one at Autozone when I specifically asked for, ordered, and received the driver's side boot. Only when I get home and compare it to the passenger side boot that I got from Rockauto do I find that they are the exact same size and have the exact same same number number molded into the rubber from the factory. No bueno. So the search was on at the junkyard to find something that was close. 5 or 6 possible vehicles were close, but the one I ended up going with was the driver's side boot from a '96 Nissan Pathfinder. (bought new, obviously, instead of going with junkyard part.) Fit around the rack end of boot is quite good. Being held on with a screw-type hose clamp as opposed to crimp clamp or plastic cable tie. Small end is a bit of a struggle to get over threads but fits nicely in recess in tie rod. The boot is longer than proper part and has more accordian pleats (11-12) versus the factory part (7-8), so the small end of the boot actually works better with it being folded over the hose clamp holding it on to the shaft. No vent on this boot, and without the vent it tends to collapse and over expand with steering movement. So I poked a small hole in the bottom of the boot with a seal pick, near the rack end of the boot. Then placed a plastic vacuum hose connecting barbed-end pipe to attach to the existing boot/bellows vent crossover line. Works fine. Boot properly expands/contracts without collapsing.

Hope this helps someone out there looking for a driver's side steering rack boot.
