1997 2.5TL, 127K. Yesterday on the highway speedo suddenly went intermintent, bouncing between 0 and speed (75mph or so). Of course, wrecked havoc w/cruise control as well. Would stabalize for a while, then start again; sometimes stayed on 0 for several minutes at a time. Is this a cable-driven speedo or electronic? An ideas? Thanx...

 

I have a 96 3.2 TL and my speedo gave out a couple years ago. The speedo on my car is electronic (I'm sure yours is too) and the mechanic replaced the speed sensor, but that didn't fix it. Turns out I had to get a whole new computer module. (it sits under the floor of the passenger front seat. I lucked out and got one from a salvage yard from the exact same vehicle as mine.

I would recommend replacing your speed sensor first - I can't remember what it cost me, maybe $125.

 

USUALLY its the vehicle speed sensor, so get that checked out first.
