slipping tranny

Okay, this is the first automatic I have operated in a long time.(1998 TL 2.5 with 109k) I am confused and think that my tranny is slipping. When I am on the highway and slowing down behind a car that is stopping in front of me or exiting off a ramp (while in D4) I find that upon accelaration to the speed limit the kick down hesitates for a moment then jerks into the drive mode again. It is not a huge hestitation but significant enough for me to be nervous. I have begun to conscienciously downshift to D3 when approaching the situation and I find that it doen't happen in this instance. My question is, what is exactly happing to make the transmission do this, is a tranny flush something i can do to possibly fix it, or am i looking at a potentially expensive and time consuming problem? i am looking for any insight out there. thanks

If it doesn't do it in D3, I'm inclined to believe that it isn't slipping. Sounds like it could be a torque converter issue.

Mine does that too. 97 3.2.
From what Ive read its a common recurring issue with these cars.
Ill be cleaning my trans filter screen and new fluid in the hopes it will stop.
Just my 2 watts worth.

yah i've noticed that, for example, going from 45-50mph and slowing down quickly for a turn, then trying to excelerate out of the turn quickly it clunked through like 2 or 3 gears high and low before it came out. it left me pretty concerned, but i've read a lot about how this car will do that. i have a 2 year warranty so i figure before it's up if it gets any worse i'll have them replace it or something.

Mine to, 96 2.5 TL, mine feels like its slipping too and under hard acceleration it takes a second to sift into the higher gear. I was just think about a Vigor 5 speed now, and do the conversion. Anyone have any info one that and has anyone done it.

Change your tranny fluid and differential fluid. It'll make a world of difference.

is this something that can be done easily on an afternoon in the garage or is this something i should have done at the dealership/elsewhere. that'll give me a direction to look in to to get this done. i'd really like to thats for sure.

in mine, it seems like it likes either really slow grandma exceleration or a bit pushier. in between it has a rougher time shifting where as slow or faster it seems to like it and is a bit smoother.

If you know how to change your oil.. you should be ok

There are instructions for both the tranny and differential fluid change in this forum
