Passenger side engine fan

What is the purpose of the 2nd engine fan located on the passenger side of a 1998 2.5L Acura TL? This car has two engine fans. Are both fans responsible for cooling the engine or does one cool the engine and the 2nd cool a specific part? My passenger side fan stopped working about 4 months ago however, the engine has never overheated...even during slow steep uphills on gravel roads in 70+ degree weather.

Thanks for your advice.

The 2nd fan is primarily for good AC function. W/o both fans the compressor discharge pressures will be high and can damage the compressor in the long run. Also, you will experience poor AC cooling at idle and slow speeds when heat transfer is inadequate.

A new fan is needed. Check ebay for replacements. I have a post on replacing the pax side fan and the Timing Belt Replacement sticky has some useful information on removing the fans. I think you'll need to remove pax side fan to access the driver's side fan. Not a lot of fun, but do-able.

good luck
