Fan Coming On?

When I got home from work yesterday after a hard drive, I shut off my TL and the radiator fan came on!? I was like WTF?! So I turn the key to the second position (ACCESSORIES on), and then it stopped. Then I shut it off again and it came back on. I was like this is gonna kill my battery. So then my dad comes and looks at it, and he tells me to rev the engine and stuff. We play aroudn with some stuff like the cd player on and off and A/C on and off and eventually it shuts off. Hasn't done it anymore yet. Very strange. Has anyone else had this problem?

the fan will turn on if the engine is a little hotter than normal, so it turns on and cools off the motor, once it is cooled it will turn off by itself..dont worry about it..only worry if the fan does not turn off at all..

It has a time limit on it, don't worry. Mine comes on if I drive for more than about 30 minutes, especially in stop/go traffic where you get little wind in the ducts to help cool the engine on a hot day.

Its actually BOTH a thermostat and a timer. I forget the temperature but its like 180 or 170 degrees before it shuts off.

The timer is set for 15 minutes I believe.

Thanks for the info. Sorry taht I didn't do a search in the first place. So dumb of me. But anyway I was worried that it would kill the battery, but since it shuts off no big deal then! Shouldn't be a further problem because its only hot 3 monhts of the year here.

Yeah, my car does that all the time during the summer... even during short drives. I popped the hood and damn was it hot under there.

I wasn't alarmed when the fan started on my '97. My mother's 85 Nissan Sentra hatchback had the same thing.

I don't know how into you guys are on checking your cars for fluids such as the oil... wiper water... especially coolant... your break fluid... power steering... tranny... etc... sorry if i missed any... anyways... check it out before you go leaving unchecked thinking its ok... well, what i'm trying to get to is... my fan came on even if i just turned the car on for a minute then shut it off... i thought it was just the temperature affecting it... well to tell you the truth... i was low ... below the line on coolant... so i flushed my coolant and added some new one... Just thought i'd let you all know...

I have the opposite problem. My fan used to come on as it was supposed to, but has now stopped working. The primary fan works, it's the secondary that doesn't. When idling or stuck in traffic, esp with AC on, car overheats. I've checked the fuses and relays to no avail. Don't really want to replace the fan motor if it's something else. Any ideas?

Fan Problem

I had this happen to me about a year ago. As I recall one fan motor is thermostatically controlled, the other should come on anytime you run the A/C. If the suspect motor is the A/C one you can test it in the driveway just by turning your A/C on and off and watching the fan. As I recall this was a pretty reasonable repair at $150 including labor at the dealership.

Quick question for anyone..... Since I had my head gaskets changed my fan doesnt come on like it used to, before everytime i cut my car off the fan would come on. Now it only comes on every now and then, Im wondering is this a good thing because everything is tight and working properly or is this something bad that having the gasket changed caused?? FYI the car runs excellent!! Jus wondering why the fan doesnt come on like it used to before replacing the heads and gaskets.

Sounds like its running better and doesnt run as hot, therefore less need to keep it cool. Thats good!

Did you get anything else changed? Coolant? Thermostat?
