CV Boot Replacement- Help Removing
CV Boot Replacement- Help Removing
I found that the driver side outer cv bot is torn and it just happened. Got a replacement kit and Im trying to remove the half shaft and i had a hard time removing the nut on the lower ball joint but finally got it off. Now I cant get the ball joint "knuckle" (or whatever the bolt is that comes out of the ball joint is called) to come out. Does it need to be pressed out? I tried putting the nut on but not tight with a socket on it and the pounded on that and it still wouldnt come out. Need some help this is my daily driver and im supposed to work tommorow afternoon. Oh and do I need to remove the upper ball joint too? Or will it swing out far enough with just the lower removed.
P.S. I had a horrible time removing the rotor as the two screws were rusted in. Impact driver broke several bit and almost completely destroyed the screw before it came out. Then the roter was stuck on the hub and I barely got it off. Nothing has come off easy

A shaft thats been in place for a long time may have some corrosion and can be very difficult to remove. You can rent a tool (Autozone Front Axle FWD Puller - OEM 27037) that bolts to the wheel lugs and presents a threaded shaft w/ a point to bear on the end of the shaft. Turn the screw and push the shaft out of the bearing hub. Some rust-buster may help.

A brass hammer might work, but be careful not to mushroom shaft end or you'll for sure not be able to extract axle shaft.
good luck

I just had to do almost the same thing when I replaced my starter. The ball joint has to be separated using either a pickle fork or a tool that seems to be less damaging. I bought the tool at Napa for about $25+ tax. Before you do that, you have to remove the fork deal also. The half shaft isn't all that hard. You will have to remove the nut on the hub after using a cold chisel to undo the lock that was dented in to keep it from falling out. It's all in the manual on CD. I think it's on site, but don't know for sure. TexasHonda can probably tell you how to access the whole procedure. Make sure to always use brass tools when driving out the halfshaft. When you reinstall the halfshaft, you have to drive the inner part past a round retaining ring. You may want to match mark the shaft and where it goes into the differential. You also must drain the differential when fooling with the driver's side half shaft. For the passenger side, you supposedly don't have to do that. If you can't find the info, email me at tempetom@hotmail.com and I'll send you the instructions. It all seems quite complicated, but it really is a step-by -step operation. It helps to have a good impact or a big tool to remove the hub nut.
