ABS/Odometer

My '96 TL3.2 has about 111,000 miles.

For the last 30K I have been driving with my ABS light on. The dealer wanted $1,800 to fix the problem. Can anyone recommend a cheaper fix - I've heard through the board that there is some kind of chronic problem with the ABS systems on the first gen TLs.

Also, my odometer just quit.... I suspect the cable has gone bad but has anyone else had this particular problem?

Search my posts for instructions on pulling the ABS codes.

You can buy used modulators for much less, usuallly < $200, perhaps < $100, if that is the problem. Wheel sensors seem to be more frequently the problem.

good luck

UPDATE: ABS & ODOMETER

The dealer (Radley Acura) tested the ABS system, bled the line and concluded I need a new ABS Modulator ($1800).

The also decided the problme with the Odometer is the electrics on the ignition, which they want $396 to replace.

Does anyone know where I can find remanufactured or junker parts -- especially for the ABS Modulator -- rather than be bled dry by teh service department?

Check car-part.com for modulator near you. What ABS code/s were found?

Does speedometer and cruise control work? If yes, a used instrument panel is needed. Again car-part.com should allow you to locate one nearby at a reasonable price.

good luck

well, radley acura changed the speed sensor and that didn't fix the problem... so they said i needed a new speed head (which i bought online from a used car parts dealer)... they installed it for free and it works -- but the did not reset the odometer either to zero or to the mileage on the old one.... AND some of the lightbulbs in the new/old part are out... I can live without the D4 bulb but the TCS light is out, the cruise control light is out and the ABS light is out. And of course Radley wants $$$$ to replace them.... couldn't they have checked them beforte they put them in?

they should have tested everything before they closed it up-=
BUT
if its a part that you brought in- they have no legal liabilty about its function

You can tell if the car is on cruise- your foot should be on the floor- not resting on the pedal- that reduces gas mileage
That ABS light is something you dont ever want to see anyway-it means the system has failed
Learn to not lock the brakes in an emergency- its a basic driving skill!!
The TCS light should flash when the wheels are spinning under 16mph (20kph) and
the system is active- again, something you can feel- if it takes a blinking light for you to notice the engine revved but you're not going up that icy slope.......

As long as the systems themself work- that is the main thing

What about the part they misdiagnosed??- it was not the cure- you dont pay for their guessing
A call to Acura may be in order

Note- there is no way for them to reset the odometer displays, meant to be tamper proof, and there should be a sticker on your car now that says odometer changed at x miles- new start reading xx,
so that in the future you car doesnt lose 70k miles when you sell it...thats the intent of the system- prevent rollbacks
A specialty speedo repair shop (look in phone book) MAY be able to help you out much better than the dealer now.
You have an older car with problems- go where there is an older guy who fixes problems! The dealer works on new cars that need servicing by the book, and new brakes~

well, the put in the new dash display for free (as long as I bought it) and they said they tested the speed sensor again and it was bad so, according to them both items needed replacement, so thanks for the suggestion but i'm not sure there is much I can do.

I agree with you.... but my sense of asthetics is offended by the lights being out. So I would like ot change them myself.... I've read the DIY but do I need to disconnect the battery to the electrics are dead? I am afraid of shorting out the new display.
