98 2.5 TL MPH gauge going from 60 to 0 in one sec

I am having a problem or something with my MPH gauge on my 98 2.5 TL. I was riding on the highway and my MPH gauge went from 60 to 0 in one second and went right back up to 60. I didn't decrease in my speed limit, so I am wondering what could be going wrong. It has been occuring a lot lately. Please help!!

I am guessing your speedo runs off a cable drive and it needs grease or the gears are wearing out
Look in the phone book for speedometer repair and call them

On my truck- it was a simple remove and grease the cable to fix a prob

it sounds like your speed sensor might be going... that happened on my legend... the speedo would bounce while i was driving then i would get a CEL... after i changed out the VSS, all fixed...

Hello KaMLuNG,

I am not familiar with the codes, and I hope to not sound stupid. What is a CEL and a VSS?

If you have no Check Engine Light (CEL) and speed control is working, the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is not the problem. More likely a faulty instrument panel gauge or circuit board. A used panel from a salvage yard is most cost effective repair.

If you have a CEL and speed control does not work, the VSS is almost certainly problem.

VSS is conveniently located underneath the intake manifold and oil filter. It's possible to do w/o removing anything, but challenging.

good luck

How many miles on your motor and when did you last change the timing belt? If your belt is slipping, I think this could happen, same thing happened in my 96 prelude for a few months before the timing belt snapped and long story short, i miss my baby
