My 97 2.5 TL is gaving some crazy speedometer issues. The needel points to 45 right when I take off and hovers around 85MPH crusing at 3k RPM on the highway. Its not a steady hover, the speed floats all over the place.

Anyone have this issue?

There is something wrong with my speedometer too, I just ordered one today from some Auto Dismantler for $100+S/H with 118K miles on it(that was closest one I found to my actuall mileage). Happened to my last civic too, tried changing VSS(speed sensor) but no help, ended up changing speedometer.

 

tmnhs81, let me know how that works for you. Is your spped needle bouncing all over the place or is it just not telling the true speed?

 

It is bouncing all over the place, but mostly starts doing that if I leave my car in sun for long time(couple of hours). Its bouncing from o(zero) to what ever speed I am going at. I'll get mine today, I'll hit you up after installing mine.

 

Well, all of a sudden it works again. Not sure what's going on but I hope it continues to work.

 

Did the Check Engine Light come on at any point while speedometer was fluctuating? If yes, the VSS is most likely cause. Extract code at Autozone to be sure.

If no CEL, then speedometer movement or gauge panel circuit board has a fault. Used gauge panel is fix or there are online shops that will repair your gauge panel so mileage stays same.
