front mount intercooler vs. short/long ram intake

Was wondering if you've heard of or know ne one that has successfully installed a front mount intercooler on their 1G tl. Im currently trying to do research before I purchase any intake ect. I want it done correctly and am more interested in performance than looks. No I am not installing a turbo. I just figured I would weigh out my options between a short ram intake, long(cold) air intake, or a front mount intercooler(approx 28x7x2.5") it would not be large I just didn't know how much room/clearance I had to play with. Im not trying to make my car fake or anything I just want to give my motor the best I can give her. Please let me know if this is the dumbest idea ever! Thx lol

from Yahoo answers:

Intercoolers are used on forced-induction cars because as the air is compressed by the turbo- or supercharger, it's temperature increases (due to the ideal gas law). This increases the chances of the fuel/air mix igniting prematurely in the cylinders (called 'preignition', or more commonly, 'knock', or 'ping').

Inter- and aftercoolers reduce the now-heated air's temp by passing it through a radiator-like device over which fresh, cool air is passed. However, if you do not have a turbo, the air inside the intercooler is the same temp as the air outside (since it has not been compressed), and no cooling occurs. Thus, an intercooler on a naturally-aspirated car does no good, and in fact, hurts performance, due to the fact that the longer and more restrictive path the air has to take on it's way into the engine increases pumping losses and hurts throttle response.

Awesome...thank you. I didn't want to get something unnecessary and I definitely don't want to hurt my motor. They make intercoolers that aren't really intercoolers just a front mount intake that looks like an intercooler. I don't want to be a poser so I greatly appreciate the info...lol

Those interfoolers are terrible. They have a pinched section and most of the piping is only about 2" ID. Stock is better, haha.

~Cheers~
