Wheel Alignment

Got a set of tires at Sears. I did not get the alignment deal. Now, I am being threatened that I will void the Yokohama Tire guarantee and was told that normally, alignment is done every 12,000 miles, which I know is BS.

Is there a place where you can get reasonable alignment cost?

Sears was charging me $60.

Can this be a do it yourself project?

Normally it is a Toe and Camber adjustment.

Thanks.

60 bucks is reasonable for an alignment.

No, you can't do it yourself, unless you have the thousands of dollars of equipment you need, plus a drive on lift.

And every year/12k miles is a bit much for the south. For northerners, maybe if your on the road all the time as pot-holes can knock it off over the winter.

Ya u have to get it done somewhere. Some places charge $45 for alignment, jus depends where u go. But $60 is still very reasonable. I've had a few alignments in my time.

I've been seeing ads for alignment for around $50. Seems reasonable.

Alignments normally go for 50 bucks if your suspension is stock. If your car is lowered and has a camber kit they might ask for a lot more. I've went to shops and tried to get an alignment with them adjusting the kit and some shops wanted 120 bucks just to do the fronts.

$60 doesn't sound too bad, you may be able to find it cheaper if you go to a smaller place, or someplace that specailizes in wheels/tires/alignment. I would go with Sears, my parents have had good luck there, but NEVER PEPBOYS, I had a problem with my volvo before, and it took ~5-6 trips to get it aligned properly and everything corrected.

You CAN do it at home yourself, I believe I have seen it before, I want to say linked to/from a Miata forum, but it basically came down to being horribly time consuming, a whole day, with help, and you're setup being ready. I'll try and find it for you, but I wouldn't suggest it.

A northerner like myself though, I am going to get one done late spring/early summer, and check to make sure all my rims are true, potholes this winter are horrible at best.

Wait, don't you want to put the 18's on first? Like put them on, then get it aligned with those wheels. I thought you were supposed to do it that way...

Nope, shouldn't matter. As long as the wheel is true, the position it's in will be the same if it's 15" or 18", the device for doing the alignment mounts to the wheel. Since the alignment of the wheel shouldn't change with the hub no matter WHAT size it is, then the alignment would be the same for either wheel. It measures the alignment based on the center point of the hub, not the size of the wheel. I WILL however be putting my springs on first as THAT will change the alignment.
