warming up
warming up
just out of curiosity.. in freezing temperature. i mean like 32F and below.. how long do you guys let ur cars warm up after a night of just sitting there? i let it warm up for like 15 - 20 min.. and my friend thinks im an asshole doing it for such a long time.. i tell him he can go start his own car in 20 degree weather for 5 min and let him crack his engine head.. and what about in the spring time.. like 60-70 degrees weather..??? thanx.....
also... i have 112k on the car now... i put honda 5w-30 bottled oil since i got the car 4 years ago..... is it time for me to switch to mobile 1 synthetic? what do you guys recommend thanks!

im in tx so i dont let it sit for that long in the winter. at most is prob 5 min when its really cold here. 60-70 degrees prob 3 min or so. They say the later models dont have to let the car warm up that long, just as long as you dont floor it when you take off.
I think there was a big thread about this in the second gen forum, and the best answer was to let warm for less than a minute, then drive conservatively at least until the water temp is up to where it should be.
Most important item on warmup is: How long does thermostat take to bring the coolant temp to operating? If longer than 5-10 mins, depending on outside air temp, then a new OEM thermostat should be installed. I've found that in Houston, w OAT of 30-50F, I can reach fully warm on the temp gauge in less than 5 mins of street driving w/ a good thermostat.
A warmed (closed loop usually begins around 140-160F coolant temp) engine goes into closed-loop fuel metering w/ much more efficient use of fuel. That's why you want to get to that condition as fast as possible.
Driving warms much faster than idling w/ car stopped. So drive car as soon as drive-ability and clear windshield permits. Sometimes you need to warm the car to defrost the windshield. This can take a while, but is necessary for safety.
good luck

because what i have noticed is that if i start it, wait for like a minute or 2 and then just go, the engine sounds really loud as opposed to letting it warm up for like 10 mintues. I also noticed when you let it warm up for like 10 to 15 min, it runs better then just letting it warm up for 5 min. i dunno maybe its a psychological thing. let me know what you guys think. thankz

Modern cars are designed to be started in all sorts of conditions so it's really nothing to worry about if you start and go as soon as possible. I only let mine warm up so I don't freeze before I get to where I want to go.
Don't let mine warm up (98 2.5). I just drive very conservatively for the first mile or two. By the end of the 2nd mile it is usually warmed up to about 50-60% of where the temp needs to be.
like it was said the manuaul dos'nt recomend warming for a long time, and in my 3.2 it really make no differance unless it's like 15-20, seat don't get any warm or heat dos'nt really warm up til i'm about a mile or 2 down the road..

I live in a cold country so I let it warm up at least 10 mins when its really cold (-10c or below) Perhaps its my aviation training but I like full opererating temperatures when I hit the street.
PS I drive away slowly to let the tranny warm up too.

I let it warm up until the engine revs less than 1000 RPM, regardless of how many minutes. Its just natural for me to do that. I get really paranoid when my friend turns on the car and instantly he shifts into D and drives off.
