Trouble starting (but NOT the starter)
This just happened the other day, and I have no idea what caused it.
When I try and crank the car (96 2.5), the starter spins, and the engine is pretty much started... as long as i hold the starter on. As soon as I let off the key, it dies. I'm getting spark to my plugs, and the fuel rail is pressurized. I know this sounds terrible, but while I'm starting it, if I push the gas pedal a little, the engine revs (while the starters still going). But once more, everything stops once the starter is turned off. It seems as if the computer provides a fuel and ignition map for starting purposes, and a seperate one for once the car is started. And that running map doesn't seem to be functioning right. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as we'll have to tow the car and probably end up getting reamed in the a$$ by the dealer if I don't figure this out.

Its not the starter... its the ignition itself. You have to replace it.
Fortunately thats a lot cheaper than the starter.

just the ignition switch, right? i did discover that if i crank it, and turn it back just enough to shut off the starter, it runs. But only if you hold the key halfway between starting and the 'normal' ignition position. I managed to drive it to the shop ( while holding the key lol) for them to replace the ignition cylinder/switch. Will I have to get all my locks/keys changed if i get a new ig. switch?

I cant answer the key issue sorry. I doubt you would though, I'd assume they're separate pieces.. (?)

This is common with legends older tl's and some nsx's.
It's the electrical portion of the ignition, the contacts get worn.
Replace just this portion of the ignition and all is fine. Think the part's around 100 buck from dealer.

Yeah, I took it to a guy I know who specializes in aircraft, he said in comparison my starter would be easy. Only cost my 40 bucks or so.
He said the copper wears off on the contacts.

In comparision to replacing the electrical portion of the ignition!
The starter is more difficult by far.
Starter...about an hour. Electrical portion of ignition...about 15-20 min.

Same problem I had. I just took it to a guy who pulled the contacts and plunger out of the starter and replaced em. Cost me $97 for the parts and labor.
I got a smokin' deal, the guy ended up taking the axel off to get the starter out and the whole job took him a little over a day. I had a tough time finding someone that would just replace the contacts. They all wanted to replace the whole starter and the best estimate i got was $590. I had found a starter online for 140 including the core charge, but our starters are near indestructible from what i have read. Just need new contacts. good luck.

Yeah, the electrical shop I took mine to said that Nippon-Denso makes the starters and they last forever. Its only the contacts that wear out

Ya, the starters and labor for these are expensive...I don't know why.
If it clicks sometimes and then starts, it's probally the starter.
If the car starts up and as soon as you let go of the key it dies, it's probally the electrical portion of the ignition.
