The sun sensor is part of the automatic climate control system.

Why? Because the car has lots of glass and when its sunny, it'll heat up the car. Greenhouse effect. The solar sensor compensates and sends more air to PREVENT the interior from getting hot.

Prevention instead of reaction

I just gave it to you.

If you didnt have a solar sensor, your climate control would be relying on the temperature sensor only. It would be reacting to the increased temperatures. The solar sensor aids the climate control and senses the increased light, thus sending cold air out to prevent the temperature build up.

basically what ken1997 is saying is that the little dome thingy you see has a sensor inside. the sensor detects the temperature of the cabin of the car and uses that to adjust to the temperature of the a/c or heater.

Actually the temperature sensor is to the right of the steering column. Its where that little black grill is.
