?'s about type II differences...

ok, I have a 98 3.2 and am installment a type II intake manifold this week. I was wondering if the type II exhaust manifolds are any different than our stock ones since the headers are prohibitively expensive for me. I am also interested in upgrading the brakes. the nsx calipers i have found are out of my budget. any other suggestions would be great! maybe RL or type II calipers/rotors? thanks guys in advance.

i think youll probly need the gasket sets for both the type 1 and 2 intake manifolds just to make sure you can mix and mach as needed. the exhaust manifold side should be the same. if i remember correctly.

Exhaust is identical, so no need to swap. Besides the wow-factor, Type IIs are better than NSXes.

Go to ebay and look for a gasket set. There are super cheap. LIKE, $49 FOR EVERYTHING!!!! I'm adding a Type II myself. I also got to get to the transmission to change the rear main seal. I have a bit of a slow drip. So, Im replacing every gasket and o-ring on the way to the transmission.
****************

Check out the price. I went to Advance Auto and got charge the same price for just two gaskets. This is for everything by Evergreen Automotive.

first, thanks for the help, this placed is a goldmine of information. I wouldn't have a clue if it wasn't for my fellow first gen lovers out there. ok, got the mani in and the car is running great at high rpm. next question is how do I get some of the low end torque back? also, is it worth upgrading the rear brakes in addition to the front?

if you want dual piston calipers for the front, just get Legend GS Sedan calipers. i have a thread on here where i did the swap... they are the exact same brake calipers except without the NSX stamped on the outside... no need to upgrade the rears... just put on a good set of rotors and pads...

hope you also addressed the usual maintenance items like changing the trans and diff fluid... our cars have a differential...

losing the low end is exactly why im not a huge fan of the type 2 swap, lots of work for no practical gain. how often are you up in the top end of your FAMILY SEDAN?!?!?! but none the less if you want to gain back the low end then go with a smaller diameter exhaust piping, but this will eliminate the gains you got from the type 2 intake, further more most cars that run an obd 2 will just adjust the car back into its factory specs anyway. dyno tests show that most bolt ons will actually hurt your HP due to the cars computer retarding timing to compensate for what it thinks are problems..... just sayin....

Not necessarily true.

ken,
I've spent a lot of time browsing the forums and from what I can tell, you really know what's up with the first gen tl's/type II's etc. do you have any advice for me? thus far I have been less than impressed with the manifold swap, almost to the point of putting the original back in. is it worth swapping the heads and what is involved in modifying the ecu? im willing to do lots of work to the car and don't mind the occasional busted knuckle but im on a limited budget. any help getting me heading in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!!

Realistically I wouldn't do the Type II swap. The ECU has to be converted to a OBD-I unit from a Legend. I had help with mine and a big budget. In the end, I got 30 hp and a car that acted a bit wonky when it came time for state emissions inspections.

You'd be better off spending the money on better wheels, tires or suspension.

At least, that's what I'd do with hindsight

thanks ken for the input re the type II heads. I've decided against doing the swap and am wondering about the possibility of using a 3.5RL block with 3.2 heads and the type II intake. anyone know if I'll run into any problems with that setup? im also wondering what kind of options I have for the suspension.

Swap the Type II manifold out for a 3.5 manifold.

^ why? I've heard lots of hype regarding the type II but next to nothing about the 3.5

The top half has longer runners internally for more low- and mid-range torque while sacrificing a bit of top-end HP found in the Type II. I've had both.

I think that would be the best solution for you. There should still be more internal volume in the 3.5 manifold vs. the Type I, so you'd see the gains where you'd feel it the most.

~Cheers~
