I had the same problem. I replaced the starter and the problem was fixed. I went with a rebuilt, because a brand new one cost almost 4 bills.

I bought my 96 2.5 from Texas and its going through its first upstate New York winter, and she takes a little encouraging to start on some of those cold days. I wonder if thats an indication of wear or is it fairly normal. Mind you its only happening on the first start of the day, and even then not too often. prolly nothin, Im just bein paranoid.

Thats exactly how my car was. Only had the problem on cold 1st starts. A couple months later, she wouldn't start until 10 cranks.

where i live, pep boys doesn't carry my starter. i just opened up the yellow pages, looked up automotive electrical, and called around. It cost me $212 parts and labor.

If it was the battery, you would prolly just hear a click.

It is possible the "electrode"??, the center part of the spark plug worn down and the gap increase, might need new plug or re-gap the plug. Bigger gap need stronger spark to jump across and cause hard starting problem.

If the problem happens when the weather gets cold, it could be a weak battery, a short in the starter windings or even a weak or sticky starter solenoid.
