How often should I change the timing chain?

Hello! New guy here.

I recently bought a used 1997 Acura 3.2 TL which currently has 160k miles. I was told the timing chain was changed at 100k. When might I be due for a new one?

Cheers!
Stuart

Hi Stuart, welcome.

Your engine has a timing belt, not a chain. It should be changed every 7 years or 100,000 miles. A qualified mechanic can show you if it is wearing prematurely.

I'll move this to the 1st generation TL forum to keep it on topic.

Does the year really matter? Not to hijack, but I have a 96 2.5TL with 85,000 kms. Timing belt never changed. I'm wondering if it's time :|

Rubber components wear because of both age and mileage. So if a 1996 car has never had a timing belt changed, I would do it ASAP, regardless of mileage.

You should get it changed! If the belt snaps, the pistons will smash into the valves.

I'd do that myself. Kind of tedious, requires a jack and an lot of disassembly/reassembly, but not as 'over the top' and some other repairs on these cars.
