Got a ScanGauge...

...and this thing is awsome!! It's a trip computer, digital gauge, and OBDII diagnostics all in one. I plugged it in today and drove around today...a total of a couple of hours today and got a pretty good 23mpg for today. My max speed was like 73 mph and the average speed was 33 mph. That's not bad mileage at all. I will do a more thorugh test tomorrow, that's when I'll be driving the car for work as a delivery vehicle.

Haha...I can't find a good place to put that thing so I ended up putting it right in front of the tachometer. I really don't think you can do anything with the ECU. It only reads the information from the engine computer. Here's the site for the ScanGauge:

Well to answer my own question (I read the FAQ)

It can display current (shows instant MPG based on throttle) or overall MPG for the current trip.

VERY useful!

Haha...copycat!! j/k

Yup. All you have to do is to plug it in. Within 15 seconds, you're up and running. This thing gives some extremely good info about how well the engine is running.

I'm retarded... since i'm running OBD-1 on my '97 (because of the Type II swap) this wont work. I guess i'll install it in my '05, though i find its MPG calculator to be quite accurate.

Haha...oops.

Welp...I did a little more thorough test today since I had to work at my parents' restaurant as a delivery boy. Here's some of the information I've gotten at the end of the night. Today, I've driven a little over 3 hours and logged about 78 miles. I'd say 70% city and 30% highway and got about 22mpg. My maximum speed was 72mph while the average speed for today was 27mph. I've used 3.5 gallons of fuel. What's really amazing was that our cars has the best fuel economy at around 50-55mph where mileage can get up to 29mpg. When I was driving home tonight, I drove on a fairly straight country road for about 5 or so miles at around 50 mph and did a mile on the highway at 70mph. The computer showed me that I have gotten 29mpg. It is not bad at all.

Ok...On the highway, at 60mph, the computer shows an instant mpg of a range between 25 and 27mpg and at 70mph, the computer shows an instant mpg of a range between 20 and 24 mpg.

So...most reports about gas mileage is right. The sweet spot in the mpg watch for our cars is at around 50 to 55 mph.

Oh...one more thing. The coolant temperature was as high as 208 degrees and whenever I look down, it's usually around 170 to 183 degrees. My question is what temperature is our t-stats rated?

Nevermind the question. I just found out from the service manual. It says the t-stats starts to open at 169-176 degrees and fully opens at 194 degrees.

Send me this tool of yours, I want to test it on my car. At 75-85, I can get 27 mpg, but I'm not patient enough to go at 50-55 for long enough to get a reading at the pump. I figure I could break 30 easily.

I really need to get the money and get one to hook up the carputer, it is one of the next things I want to do. It seems like an awesome tool to have, not that you can re-map anything, but just being able to pull codes and look at things like milage is nice.

I'd really like to see how it stacks up to real life milage too, how accurate it is versus what you pump.

About the T-stat. Don't you get the best milage when the Tstat is all the way open?
