gas gauge reading incorrectly

my gas gauge is reading incorrectly in my 96 2.5tl. i filled it up and it was showing 3/4 for a long time then it went up and then down to a half tank and everywhere in between. what would i need to fix in order for the gauge to read right? I dont want to get stuck somewhere because of the faulty gauge. also does the 96 2.5tl have a low gas light? cause if so, ive never seen it..

You can check the fuel gauge by shorting the 1-2 pins on the three pin connector to the fuel level sensor (under a plate in the trunk and hard to access). 1-2 pins are first two (blk and yel/blue wires) from left looking at connector from pin side. After shorting, turn switch to On and panel gauge should move towards F mark. Cut off switch before it reaches F as too much can damage movement. If no movement at all, replace the panel gauge. If gauge is OK, replace the fuel tank sensor.

You could also try a bottle of Techron. I've heard that fuel deposits (sulfur? ) on the fuel sensor bobbin can cause intermittent gauge movement and that Techron will dissolve them. Worth a try, because this is not an easy repair for access reasons.

good luck

you might want to pull the float out of the fuel tank and make sure it is moving around correctly.

I'll try the Techron, where can I get this?

Also where is the fuel level sensor at in the trunk and how can I get to it?

And how would I pull the float from the tank?

Ever heard of Google search? Techron available all over the map.

Fuel level sensor is under the trunk flooring (pull out), but also partially abstructed by rear seat trim. There is a 3-screw metal cover plate w/ wire harness penetrating the plate. It may be necessary to pull out rear seat to gain good access.

Remove plate, remove bolts retaining fuel level sensor to fuel tank and lift out. Gasket may stick parts together.

Get a manual before you try anything. This will have pics and procedures, and may save some grief.

good luck
